If he hadn’t messed up with that rape comment, he’d have won the race. Claire took a huge risk with trying to select her opponent. She’s well out of step with her state ideologically-speaking.
I think McCaskill is toast this time.
Certainly hope you are correct!
Yeah, but I have to think that she (or someone on her staff) knew that he would make that kind of mess up, and knew it well enough to actually spend her campaign money to see him as her opponent.
There was no way to know that for certain. Akin was a respected Conservative who represented the St. Louis suburbs for 12 years. If he was this crazy nutter, there’s no way he’d have won and held that seat for that long.
Still, Akin should’ve been more careful about traps laid by the enemy on certain subjects. When the issue of abortion comes up, the response should be clear and to the point: “I am pro-life.” If they try to lead them off to discussions about rape, it should be shut down. Unfortunately, it not only cost Akin this seat, it also cost Richard Mourdock in Indiana (who had already won statewide twice and had just dispatched the RINO Dick Lugar in Indiana).
A fellow FReeper has suggested we have professional training courses for our candidates on how to handle these “gotcha” traps. I don’t think that’s a bad idea. Watching good guys being destroyed is sickening and the cost of losing devastating to the nation as a whole, especially these Senate races.
