Difference is that was the tactics at the time of Columbine...that all changed after. The Deputy should have gone in and engaged the bad guy.

Your comment is all well and good, except the fact that the Deputy was not involved in a live fire situation.
He was outside the Building and heard live fire.

It's what they call a retirement job...chilling out during the last years of your career. I'm assuming only deputies with seniority are given those types of posts.
Virginia has always had good looking state trooper uniforms. For a very long time, their standard attire has consisted of sharply creased blue-grey uniform shirt and trousers and a dark blue “Smokey the Bear” hat.
They also used to have, in my opinion, the best-looking police vehicles in the country - until they changed the color scheme a few years back.
Unless the shooter had headphones/earplugs, he couldn’t have heard crap after the first few shots. He would have been easy to sneak up on in the hallways.
I think I would have rather had the pistol in the situation that the cop found himself. Rate of Fire about the same. Pistol less accurate at long hallway distance but quicker to put on target. Easier to walk around with weapon at the ready. Maybe faster to reload.
I think the officer probably would have had a slight advantage, not including his (hopefully) more accurate shooting.
They bled to death at that nightclub too.
