California dreamin’? Flying in the face of traditional wisdom that we live on the best coast comes a stinging new U.S. News & World Report study that says we have the worst quality of life in the nation.
The coveted Best States ranking is part of an annual study that scores all 50 states on eight categories — health care, education, economy, opportunity, infrastructure, crime and corrections, fiscal stability and the most important of all for most of us, quality of life.
Sadly, Californians are in the pits by this life-quality metric, with the Golden State taking last place at No. 50. North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and South Dakota all kicked our butt in that category, according to this study.

Depends on who is doing the home cooking. Lots of meat and potatoes, butter and corn. Versus light food like organic salads and spices cooked with olive oil etc. in California without fatty lard and butter. We have some of the best fresh vegetables, seafood, organic non-processed food here in California. Hard to get in flyover country. Not that you can't get seafood in Iowa, but restaurants serving same are very few. Des Moines has the best pork chops I've ever had. But my daughter was used to frequenting many hundreds of varied restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area offering Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Mediterranean, Japanese as well as European and Chinese fare. In Des Moines there are only a few as in a handful, not the thousands available here in the Bay Area. Here, I can easily walk some streets and get choice seafood. There in Des Moines, I rarely see people eating seafood, as it is rare.

Yes I was in Iowa a lot in 69. Great prime rib, chops etc. Corn. I come from WV where it was all meat and potatoes. My grandparent imported food from Italy for our small store and my grandmother did a lot of the cooking because mim worked. But didn’t even eat fish till I moved too Cal at age 12. My first chines food was at 13 and that wa s pepper steak and I ate around the peppers. My mother did order me two tay cos once.
I was wondering why they couldn’t cook at home. Did don’t know about availability.
We were in Chile one Nov and saw all the first including giant strawberries. They have made it easy to get winter fruity here.

Amazing, huh? Fruit from all over the world any time of the year. I suspect it's so at any port city, getting vegetables and fruit from elsewhere.
My son-in-law was raised in Iowa, and didn't have fish until he moved to California. That explains my daughter moving her family to Iowa, her husband has family there (although half his siblings moved to California and won't go back). The weather and money is great here in California, but he got homesick for Iowa. His family owns concessions in Iowa State Fair, one of the best reasons for living there.
California beaches. No bothersome nanny state rules, and always easy to get to and park.

I left Sacramento 7 years ago for Cedar Rapids, IA and I am happy as can be. Californians would regard Iowa as a sort of Hickville, but real people live here and it’s wonderful!
I thought I’d never leave my adopted hometown in Ventura County, but made the sudden decision to move back home to Texas in 2015. Glad I did. Recently revisited LA, and one drive from LAX to Burbank and back, including by streets, reminded me why I’m happier in my new home in Dallas. (Plus I was able to retire early here)
I lived in Southern California from 1965 through 1969 and even then I was spending multiple hours a day on a crowded Highway in gridlock I can’t imagine what it’s like that now. Certainly that would figure in the quality of life.

Nonsense...Been reading your comparative posts about California to Iowa. I had a multi million dollar apartment complex on a private lake in the pocket area of Sacramento. Spent about half my time out there for five years. I live about 8 miles east of Iowa and spend a bit of time there. I wouldn’t give you ten bucks for California...you’d have to move all the people out of there first before you would have any decent lifestyle at all. The main problem with so many moving out of California is they infect other areas with their sickness.
Now Iowa, that’s a lifestyle real people can enjoy. Decent, hard working people enjoying life. No fish in Iowa!!! You’re a hoot! Des Moines has plenty of good restaurants...per capita probably as many as your cherished Bay area, without all the thieves, whores, perverts, urine filled streets, etc.
I don’t understand how Texas can rank 46th in “Opportunity” and 47th in “Quality of Life”. first of all, where do you think many of the jobs are moving to? Isn’t that opportunity? Secondly, where do you find the best barbecue, plenty of beer and it’s okay to wear blue jeans practically anyplace but weddings and funerals?

Hah. You're way off the deep end and full of BS. Some people knock California as if it is completely full of gays and liberals throughout. Nothing could be further from the truth, and just goes to show that you know nothing about California. I try to give truthful statements about both California and Iowa. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. As for Sacramento, that is a comparative hellhole compared to most of California. The weak housing market there compared to the coast reflects that. As for the coast, there is a reason why people flock there and prices are many times higher than the dregs of Sacramento.
As for fish in Iowa, I'm referring to seafood if you read my statements about restaurant fare and seafood. Of course you can catch some fresh water fish in Iowa, but try catching some ocean fish and you'll come up negative. As for restaurants, there are probably over 6,000 restaurants in San Francisco alone, and many many more in the Bay Area surrounding SF. You should start counting restaurants in Des Moines, they will come up far short of what you find in a small suburb of SF. Do you have a couple million people in Des Moines each workday as you might in SF, people who go to restaurants daily? I think not. Maybe 100,000 and how many can afford it? I'll grant you that Des Moines is relatively clean and doesn't have the bums that SF has. However, SF has many upscale highly paid professionals that Des Moines finds rare. SF is a financial hub, a high-tech medical center, and an IT center of the world, surrounded by same as well as world-class universities. It is not all bums, thieves and perverts, that is blown out of proportion. You're right about decent hard working people in Iowa. But there are also lazy non-motivated people there.
So do a reality check, there's good and bad about both places. The reason my son-in-law and his siblings came to California in the first place is to find work. Jobs are plentiful here and well paid, versus in Iowa. And the weather is mild and great year-round. Lots of job opportunities count for something. A bad thing is the overcrowding and traffic congestion. All because people flock here from elsewhere. Which is why we have some bums, thieves and perverts, they all came from outside the state in the first place!
I can't speak for Iowa as I'm in Ohio, but we have a pond just full of them. You can't get any fresher than that.
For me, the best “scenery” is a street with 120-year-old houses on it.
