See before-and-after photos of the Santa Ana River Trail with homeless people gone
Orange County Register ^ | 3/2/18 | Theresa Walker, Jeff Gritchen

The last of more than 700 homeless people living in the tent encampments at the Santa Ana River Trail left on Monday — 697 of them gone to motels.

In the days since, Orange County Public Works crews have cleared away most of the debris left behind on a roughly two-mile stretch from I-5 in Orange to Ball Road/Taft Avenue in Anaheim. It won’t be known until next week just how much trash, feces, discarded syringes and other hazardous waste was collected, said OC Public Works spokesman Shannon Widor.

The last official tally from the county was on Feb. 9, with these estimates:

215 tons of trash or debris 1,165 pounds of hazardous waste, including human and pet feces 5,115 needles “These numbers are expected to go up significantly based on the ongoing clean-up,” Widor said Thursday. Once the clean-up is done, county workers will do maintenance and repairs that could include removing 2 to 3 inches of soil in the project area and trimming trees. OC Public Works also plans to make improvements on the bike trail from Katella to Ball Road/Taft Avenue that includes sealing cracks and applying a slurry seal, Widor said.

There is no start date yet for that work, he added. The maintenance was expected to take about three months when an initial start was made in late January, depending on weather or other issues. In the meantime, the area where the tent encampments were remains closed to the public. Access hours on the rest of the trail are now 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Oct. 31.

Voting for liberals to run your state has consequences. Not specifically you, of course, but generally.

They got them all cleaned up and into high paying jobs.

In the government, possibly?

If true, that would explain a lot....

The Auto Row sit-in in ‘64 started the protest krap in San Fran.
I don’t remember what problem they were trying to solve.
Probably discrimination.

So what motels will they trash? Perhaps they could be put to productive work on the clean up ? They could earn an income and perhaps develop a tad of self-respect?

prolly the Free Speech Movement led by Mario Savio.

They wanted to be able to hold political rallies on the Berkeley campus- that was prohibited at the time.

They are officially called “urban travelers” now. I kid you not.

The homes bordering the river trail no longer have a few thousand tweakers and criminals and crazies as next door neighbors.

We have less risk of a hepatitis outbreak like San Diego is getting from their urban campers.

Everyone who used to use the river trail for bike riding and jogging can go back there once again.

The beatnick movement began in New York. I don’t think it ever got much traction in California.

The two photos were taken at exactly the same point on the trail.

Taxpayers looted to pay for motels

Exactly.

How. Is. This. A. Success?????

I don't know that it is a success. Time will tell. Unfortunately, the taxpayers are being looted to pay for motels. Orange County had let too many people camp out at the river trail for too long a period of time. In January of 2018 Orange County started proceedings to evict homeless from the tent city. A lawsuit was filed, a restraining order was granted to halt the evictions, and a federal judge became involved. The federal judge worked out the deal that obligated the county to pay for motel rooms for 30 days.

I will mention that the Orange County homeless camp, with all the human feces and needles, was a terrible public health hazard. In San Diego County, approximately 90 miles to the south, there was a serious hepatitis A epidemic that centered on the homeless. That outbreak had over 500 cases of hepatitis A, with 20 fatalities. I think from a public health standpoint it was important to clean up the homeless camp.

I don't know that any progress was made towards solving the long term problems of the homeless, in terms of helping the individuals become more self sufficient, contributing members of society. Time will tell.

Cops who have been working with them are estimating that one third are feral and just want to live there, one third are drug users and/or crazy, and one third are criminals.

It did in San Francisco. Basically the Greenwich Village beats relocated there. City Lights bookstore in SF was a center for a lot of it.

What happened to the river?

The river wasn't in many of the pictures. Only a glimpse of the dry riverbed in the first picture. It may only be recognizable if you are familiar with the appearance of Southern California's dry riverbeds. (We don't get much rain here).

The pictures focused on the homeless camp, which was located along the bike trail which is alongside and above the riverbed.

At a cost....to house them in a hotel.

Who are these homeless???

In a documentary I recently saw, they mostly appeared to be illegals.

You live nearby. Are they mostly illegals?
