NRA files lawsuit over Florida gun control law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — UPDATE (6:15 p.m.):

The National Rifle Association has filed a federal lawsuit over gun control legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed, saying it violates the Second Amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21.

The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon.

Lawyers for the NRA want a federal judge to block the new age restriction from taking effect.

The new legislation raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire. It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns.

The new measures come in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

The age to buy guns should be same as the voting age.

The ID requirements should be same for buying a gun and voting.

NRA, help DeSantis and that damn waiting period is just as bad. Death of a thousand cuts to the Bill of Tights. NONE of these measures had anything to do with most of these shootings and, possibly with the exception of the age limit, nothing to do with Parkland.

Vote for DeSantis.

NONE of this has ANYTHING to do with the Parkland shooting, aside from possibly the age limit. And he would have gotten the guns awyway.

Scott needs to go.

Bill mandates 130 hours of training PLUS “diversity” education for any employee who wants to carry a gun. That is MORE training than the average COP gets!!!!

You are WRONG. A FEDERAL Court decision some time ago determined that ALL RIGHTS guaranteed under the US Constitution are extended to ALL CITIZENS.
This criminal incremental erosion of the Second Amendment has to stop.
The Constitution, by extending voting rights to 18 year old PLUS the statutory tradition of nearly every state PLUS the voting age, effectively recognizes 18 year olds as ADULTS entitled to FULL LEGAL RIGHTS, including alcohol consumption and tobacco use.

It’s time to straighten this out. You can’t try Cruz as an adult and legally treat him as a juvenile!

I tend to agree, but if that's really true, then why has the legal drinking age in Florida been 21 for decades, without having been overturned?

Yes there is, says “life, liberty, and
the pursuit of HAPPINESS”....just kidding.
Many a father has bonded with their sons
at very early ages. One of the best
mediums is to teach them to shoot,
and ALL respect and responsibility that
must accompany that right. This Cruz
character had no such guidance and
teachings. Not the rifles fault.
I was 7 years old when I won a BB
gun match, sponsored by the Jay-Cees.
I had a great teacher.

"Because Scott screwed the pooch, why would that affect 2020 for Trump in FL? That’s ridiculous."

Because the same voters that were just kicked to the curb by Scott's signing of this bill are the same voters that will be needed to again deliver the state to President Trump. Many of them are going to remain pissed at the GOP and simply stay home. Boom, pissed off GOP voters, the democrat takes Florida. It's not hard to see this and in fact it's very likely the result. It was a very big mistake for the President to have courted gun control when there was no reason to allow any measure to be on the table at all. We now have significant new ground breaking gun control laws in two states and we aren't done yet. Bottom line we are now LOSING the gun control fight and we control the Senate, the House and the Presidency. If we can't hold off additional gun control with that kind of power we might as well give up right now.

Then I guess they had better bump the DRAFT AGE up to 21 also.
I enlisted back in 68 so I really don’t give a sh!t about the draft age, but fair is fair.
If the Feds can draft you at 18 in a time of war (or peace time) depending on their needs or desires, then you should be able to purchase a weapon or a beer at the age of 18.

Moral cowardice and hope ANYBODY beats him.

DeSantis is running against him in the primary.
If DeSantis can’t beat him, vote for that idiot Nelson.

Unless RINOS face consequences, they will continue being cowards.

So, The damned SPRINO (Stupid Republican In Name Only), Gov. Rick Scott, caved in to the left and signed the bill. Proves he’s a gutless wonder with no testicular fortitude. Proves he cares more for lawless individuals than for Law-Abiding American Citizens. 18- to 21 in the State cannot own a firearm now, but CAN DIE DEFFENDEING OUR COUNTRY. This proves that Gov. Scott is a follower of the lawless left and is a against Law Abiding American Citizen.

I live in FL...voted for Scott, NEVER Again!

The Parkland tragedy was not a failure of gun control laws.
It was a failure of liberal policies and law enforcement.

You are absolutely right! I was appalled that FBI was contacted, and dropped the ball. That there were 39 calls about Cruz to Law Enforcement, that did not trigger an investigation and arrest.

The greedy decision of Parkland to put grants above duty to protect citizens by preventing arrests of teens; and to keep down any criminal activity from view was absolutely astounding!

I sold a house in FL last year, Brevard County. Are you in Parkland area? I hope residents demand better law enforcement in future.
