The 57-year-old Communist Party official expected to assume Raul Castro's seat as president of Cuba on April 19 says the country's next government will be more responsive to its people.

Miguel Diaz-Canel told reporters in the central city of Santa Clara that "the people will participate in the decisions that the government takes."

He also lamented the downturn in relations with the U.S. under President Donald Trump, saying "the reestablishment of relations has been deteriorating thanks to an administration that has offended Cuba."

Diaz-Canel appeared to be a promising a shift toward a more open governing style rather than any sweeping political reform. In a bit of political theater reflecting that new style, he waited in line to vote...

At least his last name isn’t “Castro”, although it might as well be.

Cuba’s new President in waiting wants to make the Communist Party more open without democratizing the system.

Its a change in style not in behavior. That’s what Gorbachev tried to do at first but came to eventually realize more radical changes were needed.

Democratizing the Soviet Union was the beginning of a long road. Dismantling the totalitarian state in Cuba will take even longer.

Russia has gone from a totalitarian state to one that is merely corrupt and authoritarian.

The secret police are not nearly as pervasive. People can generally travel, and have access to world sources of information.

Christianity, at least the Orthodox Church, is encouraged.

These are enormous differences.

“More responsive” can simply mean faster and harder repression of any member of the public who tries to get out of line.

There should be a big riot type overthrow of the Castro regime. Shouda’ been done when Fidel was alive to watch it fall. It’s not too late. Insert Marco Rubio as El Presidente and fast forward the country into the American orbit.

Castro and his ilk should have been slaughtered when America had a chance but Kennedy totally botched it.

I can hear the future press conference of President for Life Diaz-Canel.

Report asks President for Life Diaz-Canel "how many politicians last year were recalled because they failed to fulfill their responsibilities?"

President for Life Diaz-Canel answers "Zero".

Reporter asks President for Life Diaz-Canel "so no one claimed any politicians failed to fulfill their responsibilities?"

President for Life Diaz-Canel answers "That, is a different question.....".

Yep. If a citizen gets out of line the Communist government will immediately respond in the traditional communist way.
