The government does not ‘give you’ the right to have a gun, the constitution says it cannot INFRINGE ON YOUR RIGHT (the right you already have)

It's a common and widespread misconception especially when people, including many on our side, say things like "my Constitutional rights" and "my 2nd Amendment right to bear arms." In many ways this is similar to the separation of church of state which people have heard all their lives from apparently authoritative people and not only assume is correct, but are adamant is part of the 1st Amendment even though they've never read it in their lives.

I've done this multiple times with the same result, always using the 1st Amendment and free speech, but in the aftermath of Parkland I used the 2nd Amendment to ask my favorite trap question on my FB page:

TRUE or FALSE: The 2nd Amendment grants us the right to bear arms.
Admittedly a small sample, but out of the 12 people who answered, 10, of which 3 are veterans, incorrectly answered TRUE. That's truly bad, but again, quite common. I'm doing my part in educating people by following up and pointing out why those 10 people are wrong, but obviously we need a larger education effort.

That effort begins with the recognition on our part that people simply do not know how any of this—rights, governments, the Declaration, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights—really works or is supposed to work, anyway. I have a friend who knew enough to counter me on rights when I tied them back to the Declaration by correctly stating that the Declaration has no binding on matters. What he could not counter was when I pointed out in response that the Declaration informs the Constitution which is why we go back to it. He said, "Hmm, okay, you got me. I didn't realize that."

We have a long way to go to turn this around so the time to start is now.
