MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Florida International University’s massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.

The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.

There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.

The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.

I wonder if completion was rushed as originally it was slated for this summer.

Is it a bridge designed and built with eco friendly materials by affirmative action nitwits with dreamers as labor.

I wonder what union(s) were involved in the construction of it were and the quality of the cement i.e. how much water did they add to stretch the cement. My uncle (who was in construction mentioned a test called a ‘slump’ test that showed how much or how little water was used in the mix; the concrete was poured into a cone 12” high upside down with the mix, then put a board over end it and turn it over. When you remove the cone you measure how much slump the concrete mix fell. I forgot the number of inches is a good mix but not enough water and it’d hardly slump, too much and it’d drop a lot.

There are a bazillion checks for bridge construction....and a team of engineers.

Somebody missed a couple decimals while calculating load.

Sounds similar to another bridge collapse many years back.....maybe 20??

It didn’t. It was made totally out of concrete.

Good grief! Hasn't anyone seen how moisture and salt-laden air impacts concrete? In normal structures, concrete cracks and disintegrates over time from the outside in, and the underlying steel reinforcement increasingly becomes the structure's support.

It’s not the method but the design or the inspection of the construction material/procedures during construction that I would look into

It cost $20 million. They should have made it out of precious metal.

They applied for and met the criteria for a DOT grant. That is quite acceptable. And has nothing to do with the collapse.

A now-unavailable (but cached) page on FIU News says the bridge was constructed “using a method called Accelerated Bridge Construction” & installed on Saturday in 6 hrs to minimize traffic disruption https://t.co/xCr5CtBxlM https://t.co/zLn0gI30uI

“Potential” is an oft-repeated and inserted adjective that has no discernable meaning anymore and doesn’t clarify anything. People just stuff words together in strings that sort of look semi-coherent. Look for it, and you’ll see what I mean. “Passengers were taken to the hospital with potentially life threatening injuries.” It’s a weasel phrase.

Not too unbelievable - when you consider the total morons the engineering colleges are graduating lately, most of whom I would not trust to design a sand box. Ladies and gentlemen - I give you “Exhibit 1” of the progressive participation award generation. How’s all that “affirmative action” working out for you now?
