I have a legal question....when something was available legally, purchased and possessed as such, how does the government render it banned without paying compensation? I don’t see any mention of this in any proposed regulation. Seems to me this is a confiscation without compensation.

A bump stock allows the shooter to achieve a faster rate of semi-automatic fire. Nothing more, nothing less. It does not convert the rifle to fire more than one round with a single function of the trigger, which is the legal definition of automatic fire.

“Sessions did this based on POTUS’s direction.”

Wish Sessions was as prompt and obedient to other Trump wishes.

No court decisions re bumps that I know of.

Even the Obama admin okayed them. They simply do not fit the legal definition of full auto. Just because a huge collection idiots wants to ban something they don’t like is wrong. The over riding issue though is the acceptance of an inanimate object being intrinsically evil. That opens the barn doors. AR’s next.

Why can’t he jump as fast on the investigation of the former President?

That is a very good question. Also, how many owners will refuse to turn in their bump stocks or similar function accessories?

“I get the feeling most here have never used a bump stock.”

I get that feeling too. I get the feeling you are one such person.

Your finger contacts and actuates the trigger with every shot with or without a bump fire stock.

“Note that they never say to pull the trigger, not even once. In fact, you could replace your finger with a piece of wood, metal, whatever, and it would work the same. “

Doesn’t matter what they say. Only matters what happens. If you attached a piece of wood to the stock so you didn’t have to use your finger to actuate the trigger, you’d have a stronger legal case.

The wording of the law is clear. One shot per trigger function. With a bump stock, you get one shot per trigger function. The bump stock does nothing other than making it easier to pull the trigger really fast.

Laws either mean things or they don’t. Words mean things or they don’t. Legislation by fiat was not OK when Obama did it, and it’s not OK when Trump does it.

I suspect it ultimately won’t matter though.

BATFE has been told to declare them machine guns by Trump. When the president issued orders to executive branch they do as they’re told. Most likely this regulation will get struck down in court and then congress will change the law, which is dangerous.

The more important debate now might be deciding whether to challenge it in court and risk congress messing with this situation. I am very undecided on that.

“I support Second Amendment rights. I’m asking legitimate questions that one who knows nothing about firearms would ask.”

The law states a machine gun is a firearm that fires more than one shot with a single trigger function. That is the legal definition. Bump stock guns fit this definition. There is one trigger pull per shot fired. A bump stock makes pulling the trigger really fast easier.

If you think they should be banned then the law would have to be changed. I see no way of doing that without opening the door to banning all semi auto firearms. You can bump fire *any* semi auto without a bump stock, it just takes more practice.

What legal wording would you use to ban bump stocks without banning anything else? The current proposals being floated are basically saying any device that helps you shoot faster is a bump stock and therefore illegal. You know what else helps people shoot faster? Competition tuned triggers, recoil reduction devices (muzzle brakes), better optical sights, shooting slings, lightweight components, and a host of other devices. Do you really think the left won’t use the wording to ban huge swaths of things?

****Do not buy the media narrative****. This never had anything to do with bump stocks, at any point. This has never been anything other than getting a foot in the door to ban semi autos. They’ll move to those evil bolt action sniper rifles after that.

They don’t care. You’ll turn it in and you’ll like it. If you resist you go to jail. If you resist seriously, they’ll kill you in front of your family. Then they’ll get on tv and tell everyone what a violent gun nut criminal you were. Everyone on FR will nod in agreement and say that you had it coming.

Those are the facts of the matter.
