--you've got it right--while I detest Reid for most of his "grown in office positions" --(especially his about face on immigration) he was responsive to the Nevada voting public (at the time) and even in later years as majority leader , kept some of the anti-gun stuff off the Senate schedule because he knew it would lose.

In his last senate race , the NRA did not endorse him , nor IIRC did it in the previous one.

--it is disgusting to see this oft repeated lie that "the NRA endorsed Harry Reid", as an excuse for being anti-NRA---
