Today breathlessly made the teacher walkout in Oklahoma and other states its “top story” this morning, touting the “wildfire” as “thousands are rising up and walking out.” The reporter on the ground in Oklahoma claimed it’s “turning out to be more than a protest, but a movement,” and host Hoda Kotb billed it as “a powerful movement that’s sweeping the country.”
A clip showed a student claiming that the walkout is “all for us.” Except it’s not. It’s really about teachers demanding higher salaries, though some window dressing has been added about increasing overall school funding.
One inconvenient fact that Today had to recognize: the Oklahoma legislature just adopted a record $6,100 teacher pay raise, the largest in state history. But teachers continue to refuse to teach as they hold out for more.

The national average ***starting*** teacher salary is $38,617, while the average teacher salary in America **(non-starting)** is $58,950.
They don’t go in to it for the salaries. They go in to it for the 180 work days/year and the insanely generous pension and health bennies. OK has not moved their teachers to a definined contribution plan, but if they do, teachers are covered thanks to this pay raise.
Bet taxpayers won’t see 6 grand more in their paychecks any time soon...

Oh, I know why some go in. I have family who teach. All exceptional and I’ve never heard them complain. I’m saying don’t complain when you know what you are walking into

Hmmm, presumably your community is “aging out”? Meaning the school age population is diminishing? If correct, the question you and other residents should ask is “where is the money going and why is more money needed”?
if teacher pay we’re directly proportional to student performance and ability to teach this might be an argument. It’s not. In fact generally speaking states spending the highest per student do poorly
I live in this area, and it’s a joke !!! We call it the “Two Week Rule “. Our kid never goes to school for more than two weeks without a holiday or Late Start day. I also studied education with full knowledge of the salary (never taught, though ).
The state is heavy on Administrators in the 500+ school districts. Many super small ruler areas could at least consolidate administrators. The Superintendent of the failing Tulsa Public Schools has new 3 - year contract of over $800,000 with additional $1500/month for cell phone and car.
Maybe these liberal, global-warming types should consider online classes ( eliminates the elaborate buildings and overhead ). Have one child in college who will graduate after 3 years and said - could have done it MORE QUICKLY online, but stifled by the way classes are only offered certain semesters, and all the gen-ed that won’t affect major studies.
I have family who teach, too. They know better than to discuss this with me.
Just wait until their RETIREMENT kicks in. That’s where we taxpayers should be ready to bend over and take it up our Obamas. Because that’s where it’s coming.
For as long as I can remember teachers have complained about their low pay. When they don’t get their way they act like some of the spoiled brats they’re supposed to be teaching. No sympathy from me.
I know where our school taxes are going: pensions and health bennies.
That’s average. OK’s is $46k average. This isn’t about overpaid or underpaid, OK is losing teachers to other states like Texas that pays $10k minimum more. Just like our national government, OK legislators are lining their pockets and their special interest groups.
Sure are a lot of “conservatives” on here trashing OK teachers and their efforts to make more money. Especially freepers with NO understanding of what today’s teachers put up with. Teachers now have classrooms of 35-40 students, including special needs. And they work more than 6 hours a day.
Looks like capitalism and democracy at work to me. The governor is free to fire them all. And they are free to protest the mismanagement of OK budget. Money that could be going to our schools. FYI, OK doesn’t have lefty teachers pushing the libtard agenda. Most are pretty conservative and voted for Trump.
In what universe? In wealthier areas teachers are solidly middle class. In poorer areas teachers are among the highest paid people in area.

Public school teachers are like other people on the public payroll. Constantly whining about their salary while they are actually raking it in.

Never at school more than TWO weeks without a holiday or Late Start, until April - now Walk Out ! Y’all knew the salary before signing Contract to teach. I studies education, too - cuz I liked the hours, holidays off with my kids, summers free, benefits.
Overpaid administrators gobble up too much money, and the system is antiquated - my kid learns more at home on her cell phone than in the classroom.
Oklahoma’s teacher pay is excessively low. The lowest in the country. $10-15k less than Texas. Even with the raise, they’re still a lot lower.
6 months? Really? I'd like to see you support that with facts. And don't just count the school days and say that equals 6 months.
And teachers don't get paid for a year of work ... they get paid for the months they work and opt to have it paid out over the full calendar year.
