I Downloaded the Information That Facebook Has on Me. Yikes.

When I downloaded a copy of my Facebook data last week, I didn’t expect to see much. My profile is sparse, I rarely post anything on the site, and I seldom click on ads. (I’m what some call a Facebook “lurker.”)

But when I opened my file, it was like opening Pandora’s box.

With a few clicks, I learned that about 500 advertisers — many that I had never heard of, like Bad Dad, a motorcycle parts store, and Space Jesus, an electronica band — had my contact information, which could include my email address, phone number and full name. Facebook also had my entire phone book, including the number to ring my apartment buzzer. The social network had even kept a permanent record of the roughly 100 people I had deleted from my friends list over the last 14 years, including my exes.

There was so much that Facebook knew about me — more than I wanted to know. But after looking at the totality of what the Silicon Valley company had obtained about yours truly, I decided to try to better understand how and why my data was collected and stored. I also sought to find out how much of my data could be removed.

Yeah, I know, nytimes. And I know there are some folks on board FReerepublic that do NOT use FB and otheres do for various reasons, so, maybe this article can help you or them or your loved ones cut down on some of the info that suckerburg has stored on you/them. It appears that there are some things that can not be removed or deleted. Me? Nope. Mrs.rktman, yeah, so...............

There are many ways the data is being collected.

IMHO, Facebook is one of the worst offenders.

I think it’s basically a honeypot. Kinda like another operation which grew rather exponentially....

But then, Nully gave me my official tinfoil hat when I joined up!

Never been there.
When I was hiring for classified positions, had some folks who were naive enough to have signed up there check names.
Crossed off any potential employee that was there.
Still got excellent employees, hah!

Yeah, it’s bad. Google is next, and that will be worse.

Internet tracking (cookies) has been a common practice for years on every site visited.
I’m not seeing why this is just now being discussed. I’ve been offended by this invasion of privacy for decades.

Only a lurker visiting sites related to cooking/recipes. A Member?? NEVER!! Any information they have re me is nothing but speculation, fantasy...or ill gotten. A house of Ill Repute has nothing on this crew of true deplorables

Google seems to be closely tracking everything posted here.

Google has a better FR search than the FR search feature...

LOL! There are those that find it suspicious if you DON’T have a social media presence. As in: “What’s wrong with this candidate? What’re they hiding?” Some people are just more private than others. Me, ain’t nobody’s business what I got or what I do unless I decide they are worthy of sharing. ;-)

My fake fakebook page has me as a white man who thinks he is a black lesbian.
I should see what kind of stuff they have on me.

I never use the “G” if it can be avoided. My phone keeps telling me I “need” to turn on certain things google related. Uh, no, I don’t. And still there’s data out there.

LOL! Cause now they’ve been outed. I have my browser set to delete history and cookies anytime I close it down. That’s why I always keep getting asked the same security questions on certain sites I log into. And they still have trackers on me. And you. ;-)

Lose a limb and obtain a latina last name on your fakebook page and you’ll really have them.

Make a post on FR. Search Google for your post a minute later and it will find it. Amazing.

OK, no presence on FB. That's good. Then the author wrote: The social network had even kept a permanent record of the roughly 100 people I had deleted from my friends...

LOL...he DELETED 100 "friends" and claims he was a "lurker." What a joke. Other than family and true old college friends, I've added, I think, maybe one "friend" on FB. I have maybe 7 or 8 total.

I believe there is an html tag you can place in your posts to keep it off search engines. Not sure if it can be placed in the body though.

“Google has a better FR search than the FR search feature...”

Yep. I see FR posts linked when I search for something on Google ALL THE TIME.
