Hmmm ... we had a base there as late as 1993. It is well east of Japan, and we had (for a time) the only competing claim. Looks good.

How the hell did they find these at the bottom of the ocean 1150 miles from shore?

All I know is, I was on a Japanese cruise trying to impress my new girl, when all of a sudden a diver popped up and yelled "Is anyone here a marine mineralogist!"

Well, good to see the Japanese scoring big gifts from the earth kami.

The Chinese will undoubtedly try to take over.

“There’s enough yttrium to meet the global demand for 780 years, dysprosium for 730 years, europium for 620 years, and terbium for 420 years.

The cache lies off of Minamitori Island, about 1,150 miles southeast of Tokyo. It’s within Japan’s exclusive economic zone, so the island nation has the sole rights to the resources there.”

16 million tons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.

I owe my soul, to the company store. 😁👍

The US has its own sufficient supply of rare earth elements (REE) but they have been held hostage by deep state enviromental-wackos. REE mining and milling companies will not go into the long term investments neneded if some next Administration or so saddles them with more regulations, just like it happen in the nuclear power industry.

Some of the waste from REE operations would contain low-level radioactive thorium. Almost forty years ago the Low-level Radioactive Waste Policy Act was passed to set up facilities for handling low-level radioactive waste for all 50 states. It has done little except to spend money and generate paper.

Good it’s off the Japanese coast and not Chinese coast.

Didn't Japan and China announce yesterday that they intend to meet to talk trade for the first time since 2010? Coincidence?

If true, I'll bet this pisses off the Chinese to no end...at least to semi-infinity.
They've been scooping up mining rights and rare-earth minerals in Africa for years now.

Trump should be working out a deal with the Japanese right now to get us out from under the thumb of the Chi-coms.

No, not really.

Rare Earth metals are not rare. They’re everywhere. We have several mines, shut down at the moment due to Chinese dumping.

If the US political system really wanted to hurt China, this is where to do it. Slap a 200% tariff on anything with a rare earth in it that comes from China. The mines would reopen the next day and China would really hurt.
