Three Australian warships were challenged by the Chinese military as they travelled through the disputed South China Sea earlier this month, the ABC can reveal.
The confrontations with the People's Liberation Army are believed to have occurred as China was conducting its largest ever naval exercises in the hotly contested waters.
Defence sources have confirmed HMAS Anzac, HMAS Toowoomba and HMAS Success were challenged by the PLA Navy as they were transiting towards Vietnam where they are now conducting a three-day goodwill visit in Ho Chi Minh City.
One official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, insists the exchanges with the Chinese were polite, but "robust".
The Defence Department has refused to answer questions or discuss details of the interactions between the Australian warships and the Chinese military.
In a statement it has confirmed HMAS Anzac and HMAS Success recently travelled through the South China Sea after leaving Subic Bay in the Philippines, while HMAS Toowoomba also went through the disputed waters after departing from Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

Pei-Ping.
Ping.
It’s a miracle there’s not been a “things got out of control” battle throughout all of these situations.
I have many fond memories of subic bay.
“One official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, insists the exchanges with the Chinese were polite, but “robust”.”
International waters. Shouldn’t have been anything but polite.
We used to own the S China Sea. Who gave it away.
China has really improved their warships it seams.
For that matter it would be interesting to see India in on this.
I’m guessing the Chinese navy may have an edge in preparation...they aren’t sapping readiness and morale by allowing coed shackups on board and/or making sure sexual deviants are coddled.
We should be lighting up the Chinese aircraft with fire control radar and shoot them down if they don’t turn around.
You left out South Korea and Taiwan.
The Philippines navy is a joke but they should be out there too
India and china would start a war. They despise each other.
I'm certainly no expert in such matters but I think it would be a big mistake for Taiwan to participate given the tense relationship there. As for South Korea...with the talks about to begin it might be wise for them to refrain.Best that China,Kim Fat Psychopath's only friend, doesn't see South Korea and a "provocateur".
They are. And it is important. All the nations you mention do this at least semi-regularly. I know the Royal Navy has had a ship through there (HMS Sutherland) in the last few weeks. France does it as well.
Clinton/Obama/Dimocrats/Pubbie Crats you know, the enmities of the Republic.
Gotta watch that auto spell correct. Sigh.
So it’s the US, Japan, UK, Australia, India, Taiwan, Vietnam and S Korea vs China.
The financial muscle is there to get China into a ruinous naval arms race. Recall that the arms race with the Soviet Union during the Reagan defense buildup certainly contributed to its downfall.
There is no comparison possible with the USSR. China has become the factory and the banker of the world, the USSR was not.
If an arm race should ruin someone, it’s the West and its trillions and trillions debts, not China.
I don’t think I’d mess with a ship named “Toowoomba “
