$46,654: Annual Cost of Detaining Illegal Alien Exceeds Average American Income
CNS News ^ | Apri 25, 2018 | By Terence P. Jeffrey

The federal government paid a “bed rate” of $127.82 per day to house each illegal alien detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in fiscal 2016, according to ICE data published in a new report by the Government Accountability Office.

Even if you do not count the extra day in that leap year, that works out to $46,654.30 for each detention bed occupied by an illegal alien for 365 days.

The approximately $46,654 it cost to house a detained illegal alien for 365 days in fiscal 2016 was approximately $104 more than the average income for Americans 15 and older that year—which, according to Census Bureau was $46,550.

The GAO report - “Immigration Detention: Opportunities Exist to Improve Cost Estimates” - examined how ICE calculates its anticipated budgetary needs for detaining illegal aliens. It discovered, for example, that ICE had made some basic mathematical errors in preparing its budget justifications for Congress, including a $34.7 million multiplication error in its fiscal 2014 request and a $129 million multiplication error in its fiscal 2015 request.

ICE also estimated that the “bed rate” would be $132.59 for fiscal 2017 and $133.99 for fiscal 2018.

Assuming that the $133.99 “bed rate” for fiscal 2018 is accurate, that means it will cost the federal government $48,906.35 to detain an illegal alien for 365 days this year.

Rope is cheap and can last a long time if good quality.

Lots of big strong trees around.

Low cost.

A new holding center or 2 being built in San Diego alone. Can’t believe how necessary they are when it’s so much cheaper to deport them. Prison industrial complex. Deep state.

We have leverage with every one of these countries which are sending us these people, and certainly with Mexico, which is allowing free movement to their northern border. It’s about time we start applying that leverage. Do that, and Mexico will enforce our southern border for us.

We ought to build facilities on the border and run them 'Mexican' style. The detainees would feel at home defecating in buckets.

Or let sheriff Joe run them.

Easy solution: work camps. Make them earn their stay. But liberals would scream, and scream, and scream. And then scream.

I don’t know. I would hope they are being turned away at the border instead of costing us thousands in judicial and detention costs. I hope the new facilities are to house illegals who are being caught by stepped up enforcement against those already in the country, until we can get through the judicial process to deport them.

I earn $25,500 as an F/O for an airline; then come taxes, union dues, etc etc etc.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio had it down to $63 per day all in. That's still $22,000 per year per prisoner.

If we’re going to be humane about this (not necessarily the right answer), we can house them like my sons were housed, I was housed, my father was housed, and my grandfathers were housed - military tents in the middle of nowhere. Feed them. House them. Eventually send them home. NEVER under any circumstances release them into the general population. NEVER under any circumstances put them in a situation where the crime of entering our country illegally is profitable. Make the criminals who come here illegally regret any delays in deportation. Make them want to stay away.

Illegals are the only ones currently getting Bernie’s “guaranteed income”.

Why should they work?

Why should they assimilate?

Why should they learn English?

Why should they try to become legal citizens?

If I knew of a peaceful country, who would guarantee me a lifelong income, I’d illegally infiltrate there, too.

I’m 72, and I didn’t work all my life, and pay taxes, to accommodate these third-world assholes. And it’s our assholes in congress who’s making it possible.

It’s time to play “cowboys and Illegals” and let the people solve this problem...after all, it’s OUR homeland that they are invading.

Aren't you overdue for that fourth stripe, the left seat, and an additional $1,500 per year?

;^)

We idiot taxpayers house them due to insane laws Congress will not change.
These people coming in now deliberately get caught so they go into our system. They ask for asylum which means we have to give them a hearing to see if they qualify for asylum. That takes an average of 2 years.
We are so freakin stupid

if each freeper wrote their elected officials and demanded the laws get change NOW we could at least not repeat this insanity in 2019
