U.S.-Backed Forces Launch Offensive to Rid ISIS

U.S.-backed Syrian forces are launching an offensive against ISIS aimed at driving the militant group out of its remaining strongholds in northeast Syria.

Military officials made the announcement Tuesday, saying it’s the last step in bringing lasting stability to both Syria and Iraq.

Operations against ISIS in the Middle Eastern River Valley began earlier this year after Turkey launched an offensive against Kurdish forces in Afrin, Syria.

This resulted in Kurdish forces redirecting their resources from combating ISIS to bolstering fellow Kurds in Afrin.

Pentagon officials have said ISIS has lost about 90-percent of the territory it once held in Iraq and Syria.
