Then, the political environment that worked more or less peacefully except for the Civil War will become unstable and violent. Overt political opposition may be stifled for a time, the people and sentiments behind it, however, are not going anywhere and desperation can make things that were unthinkable even five years ago look like a real option now. The lefties should not push it.
