Elsewhere in fawning coverage of McCain’s last days in AZ, I read that if he passes during May, a special election to replace him would be held in November. If the vacancy comes up on or after June 1, the election to replace him occurs in 2020. Apparently McCain is claiming that any interim appointment to fill his seat until a special election determines his successor has to be a “McCain person”, which includes his wife Cindy or someone on a list pre-approved by McCain. I don’t see how the Governor would feel constrained to use only that list in selecting the interim appointee. People will want to show proper respect for McCain, but not more than proper respect.

Martha McSally would be my choice.
