Thankfully these fissures are nowhere near the airport, nor should there be any on that side of the island.

The lava flows have been walking themselves eastward for many thousands of years.

But airplanes do suck in a lot of air, and just like in Europe a few years ago, one smoky volcano can sure mess up a lot of flights paths.

This isn’t really a blow kind of volcano. It has constant lava flows. One fissure opens and another closes. The only reason we’re hearing about it is it’s taking out houses. Last time that happened was quite a few years ago.....and they started building on that lava again about 8 or so years ago. They just wait for it to change direction and cool off then they start building again.
We have property about 20 minutes northeast of the new lava flows. Heading over there again in September.
