Yes, of course, my uncle was stationed there in the late 50’s and said as much.
Americans like to think we have a bond with Europe because so many of us see ourselves as English, Irish, German etc., they don’t see us that way.

I am German and Irish, and never set foot in either country, till 1980, when I went to Germany, while in the USAF. I came away more anti European than before.
I spent time in Turkey too. That place REALLY sucks. I also became very anti Turkey too. 👎
