The economy may be chugging along, but many Americans are still struggling to afford a basic middle class life.

Nearly 51 million households don't earn enough to afford a monthly budget that includes housing, food, child care, health care, transportation and a cell phone, according to a study released Thursday by the United Way ALICE Project. That's 43% of households in the United States.

Well gee CNN, why don’t you open up the gates to your mega mansions and let these people in, like MS-13 and Hamas, you already support them

Yes, the article may be alarmist and from a suspect source, but wage stagnation is real and has been a serious issue for about 4 decades now. Which means we are into the second generation that doesn’t have much hope, on average, of being as prosperous as their parents, much less exceeding them.

OH! So NOOOOOOOW we’ve discovered that lots of people have been sucking wind all through the Great Recession. Now that the economy is finally getting better. Now that Obama is out of office.

Because for 8 years this was hardly even mentioned. Great job as always CNN.

I have relatives that have nice TVs, electronics, and data plans that have the same “issue”.

That’s because all the workers laid off because of Obamanomics were able to land part time minimum wage jobs.

I would REALLY love to see the budgets of these people... oh, that's right, they don't have one. Well, a quick interview would do: "how much do you smoke? Do you have cable channels with a premium package? High speed internet? Unlimited cell minutes? Are you considered obese? What expensive pasttimes do you spend money on?"

I think we would be shocked at the answers.

Fake legacy news CNN can’t understand it.

No mention of eight years of obama economics, QE1, QE2, QE3, QE4, HARP, HAMP, TARP, Stimulus, Cash for Clunkers, Operation Twist, adding more to the deficit than all other previous administration combined and accounting for inflation, bank bailout after bailout after bailout, etc.

It is the housing and rental costs that are out of control.

You’re assuming a static situation. We have a much more UNemployable job force than we did decades ago: stupider, on drugs, and with illigitimate children and entitlement attitudes which don’t come with a work ethic.

“California, New Mexico and Hawaii have the largest share of struggling families, at 49% each. North Dakota has the lowest at 32%.”

What do you know? Leftist Utopia ain’t so great.

~~~~~
What a contrast California and North Dakota are. Wouldn’t you figure it the opposite if you look at the GDP of these states. California is supposed to be the 7th largest economy in the world, but they have half their population can’t stay afloat.
The difference it would seem is all about the culture. Those trained and indoctrinated with an entitlement mentality versus those who learned rugged self sufficiency.
It’s tough enough to pay for cigarettes, booze, lottery tickets and meth. Food and rent are a much lower priority.
They would if they had a budget. But no,they are too busy buying 70” TVs, having to have sat TV in every room, new cars every two years,every kid they have playing every sport and attending all functions, and so on.
The old ways of living within your means means nothing anymore. They will wine and cry until someone bails them out.
They could afford the basics if they developed a sense of responsibility, went out and got jobs and kept those jobs.
Maybe their could give up their fancy cell phones, tats, manicures, and fancy cars so they could pay the rent and feed the children. The mothers clearly have been feeding themselves.
Well, we could give them another tax cut, but I’m guessing the democrats would complain about that, too.
