Starbucks employees, customers express concern over new policy: 'I can't see how this will work'

The “Third Place Policy” maintains that employees should consider anyone who enters Starbucks space, including restrooms, cafes and patios, a customer “regardless of whether they make a purchase,” the company said in a statement.

In a Starbucks subreddit, people are voicing concerns that the new policy will lead to stores being filled with homeless people and drug users. One user who claims they work at a Chicago Starbucks wrote that a homeless person using the bathroom got into a fight with a customer and police requested to see the store policy before taking action.

“This is exactly the kind of behavior that I fear will drive all the regular customers away, at least from urban locations. Opposing racism is nice and all, but it is not the responsibility of Starbucks to resolve all urban problems at one location let alone turn its stores into homeless drop-in centers,” another user wrote in response.

On another thread debating the new policy, a Starbucks customer expressed similar concerns. “I can't see how this will work in urban areas with large homeless/mentally ill populations... I just worry about how many employees will be put in danger (or get fired) until this happens,” the user wrote.

Someone claiming to be an employee who works at a store in the loop in Chicago said they hate the new policy because the store bathrooms have turned into a hub for drug activity. “We haven’t been allowed to change our bathroom codes since April. So almost all the junkies and homeless people know the code now. About once a week we find needles, drug baggies, blood all over the toilet or walls,” the user wrote.

Sell your Starbucks stock now before the new policy hits quarterly earnings.

Starbucks stock is already down about 12% from its 52 week high.

Wait until regular customers get fed up with drinking their high priced coffee in a public toilet crowded with bums and tramps.

Word should get out to the homeless that they can now find a warm place and a bathroom without buying a thing

The policy of groveling to political correctness will kill traffic at Starbucks.

Good riddance. They deserve it.

Good idea! Many cups, little driving ;-)

I’ve never understood the draw of Starbucks; I think a lot of people go there simply because it’s trendy, has wifi, and you can sit around a long time. My experience of their drinks hasn’t been impressive.

Not my ‘cuppa’. Like you, I can do all of that in more comfort at home.

(Pretty soon, every little burger joint or ‘Ma and Pa’ diner will have Wifi, anyway...even my grocery store does.)

Happened to me at a Kroger the other day in an affluent part of Atlanta. A dirty bum was standing at the entrance asking every person walking in for money. I said something at customer service and they acted like I was the jerk and said he was “harmless”.

I give this 2 weeks in places like NYC, etc. The cops will probably make them stop. I read an article a while ago about how some fancy supermarkets have issues with the homeless camping out in their ‘cafe’ areas. But the thing is that’s away from the main shopping area. In Starbucks it’s the whole business, sitting there.

It’ll be nothing but addicts and crazy people, you can’t run a store in NY and not be able to throw those people out. There’s tons of them and they are all nuts.

Good luck starbucks, you are run by MORONS.

And I have mistakenly assumed a customer was someone who purchased something at a business.

What should Starbucks employees do in preparation for May 29?

Cash out their 401K plans, especially if the plan is Starbucks stock heavy...in preparation for becoming homeless themselves.

I said something at customer service and they acted like I was the jerk and said he was “harmless”.

Next time, tell customer service that you are going to do some shopping and you need them to GIVE YOU some cash.
