Hey, are you all set for the weekend? Got all the picnic food, charcoal and beverages?
Do you have the reservations for the cabin, the campsite or wherever you plan to spend the time?
Sounds like fun doesnt it? It probably will be except for the families of the men and women who lost their lives fighting for the protection of our country. In fact, those who died so that you and yours can celebrate the Memorial Day weekend in peace and safety.
We tend to forget that part of the story. For those families, the holiday brings mixed emotions because they associate the commemorations with real people in their families, many of whom they knew personally. For them, Memorial Day is a day to remember the lives and deaths of people they loved and lost.
Theres an interesting test of how real the meaning of Memorial Day is regarded in your town. Try it. Drive up and down several residential streets and see how many people are flying the flag in front of their houses the Stars and Stripes, not any other.
Ive done that and its shocking how few residents even bother. Id wager many of those people dont even own an American flag. There have been years when my house was the only one in my area to show the colors.
It varies each year, of course, but it still isnt as many as it should be, considering that over the course of our history more than 1,354,000 of our citizens were killed defending our freedoms. That doesnt even take into consideration those who were injured and whose lives were drastically changed forever by their grievous wounds.

Our flag proudly flew the entire weekend. Several neighbors did the same.
Mine is up...Too bad my flag is the only one on the street.
Thanks for that info ... I was going to post the same thing.
We must never forget ...
Rain!
No problem. Put mine at half staff a while ago. Will raise to top at noon. One of three I can see in my view shed. (LOL!)
Seems to depend on where you live.
Lots of flags year round in my neighborhood but I live near JBLM.
Flag went up an hour ago.
I must admit that it was with a lot of reluctance that I stopped flying her during the Ødungo regime. When I bought this home nine years ago one of the first things I did was install a flag pole.
On the day after election day in 2008 I flew the flag upside down - a sign if distress and protest. I regretted doing it, not because of any disrespect for the HNIC, but because it disrespected the flag. After that I put the Stars and Stripes away, only raising it in honor of my dad’s passing.
I’m happy to be comfortable letting her fly again
“For the first time in eight years I’m proud to be an American”
I have 2 positions on the flag holder. Up at a 45 degree angle and straight out horizontal. Is horizontal half staff?
LOL! The night obamskee one a second term, the flag came down for the next 4 years and only went up on certain days such as this, July 4th and Veterans day. The rest of the time? Nope. Went back up the day after Trump’s WIN.
Well if you can’t fly the flag then........
You can still be a rebel and were a MAGA HAT
“Make America Great Again”
PS If you have one!
Ruh Roh! I don’t know. I would think (that ain’t easy) that straight out would be half staff then the 45 would be full. Anyone? Bueller?
My flag stayed furled for the long eight years of the Kenyanesian Usurpation.
It is flying proudly today.
President Donald Trump was born on Flag Day - June 14th
Just don’t go to the cheesey-cake factory in the Miami area.
Hmmm. That means he’s 51 weeks older than me.
5 flying here all weekend.
