Kim Jong-un's right-hand man reportedly on way to US for talks about Trump summit

Former North Korea spy chief and senior official Kim Yong-chol is headed to US after stopping over in Beijing, presumably for talks with US officials regarding a possible summit between Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, and President Donald Trump, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said on Tuesday.

Kim Yong Chol has been closely involved with talks with South Korea as well and his visit to the United States would further indicate preparations for the historic summit are moving ahead.

American officials have been in North Korea and an advance team has travelled from Pyongyang to Singapore where the on-again off-again summit could still happen on June 12.

It marks the latest sign - amid a flurry of diplomatic moves - that the on-again off-again summit may still go head on June 12.

Trump withdrew from the planned summit with Kim last Thursday, citing hostile North Korean comments, but has since said the meeting in Singapore could still happen....

I get the sneaking suspicion that the government of NK is about to collapse. PDJT knows this. He can walk away not only because no deal is better for the US than a bad deal but because he knows they can afford to have no deal. It may very well be a life and death issue for Kim Jong Un.

Sorry left out a contraction...

because he knows they can’t afford to have no deal.

The NK leadership may very well be negotiating their villa on the Riviera

I’m wondering if it may be Kim Jong un’s ego causing him to want the meetings. He can either be remembered as just another Kim or he can be remembered as the Kim who transformed North Korea and brought it into the modern world. That might lead to his doom, but someone like him used to having unchecked power may think he can manage the change and survive it.

Even the Soviet leadership eventually realized what they were doing just wasn’t working and was never going to work. Maybe Kim Jong un has had an epiphany.

We will know more in a week or so.

I had thought that the reaction of Kim after he went to Beijing the second time was terrible.

Trump cancelled.

Now maybe things are improving. Maybe.

We will see.

Doing anything connected to Kim Jong-un is like being an “in flight missile repairman”.

Trump being Trump, letting Kim know who is boss. The summit will happen and be a Trump triumph. And Democrats will be flummoxed.

Yep - thongs have deteriorated to the point where Kim (and many of his generals) fear for their existence and coming into line with Trump is their best bet - I wonder how many of the true old school hard cases are considering a coup that would end up finishing the devastation....

“Maybe Kim Jong un has had an epiphany.”

I suspect that people who have executed their relatives by setting dogs on them, mortars and antiaircraft guns can’t afford to act on an epiphany. They can only stay in their gated, guarded palaces or move about with plenty of guards. If Un loses power, no matter how little, he will be murdered.

I’ll bet getting promoted to Un’s ‘right hand man” is about as safe a place to be as, say, Stalin’s head of the NKVD. Dictators regularly dispose of their right hand men because they don’t want those men to develop enough contacts to kill the dictator.

All this breathless following of the negotiation twists and turns is silly. It does not affect the outcome. The Deal is done-has been done. Kim is wriggling trying to save a bit of face throwing pebbles at a now immovable object.

‘Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?’

This tweet will go down in history! What a time to be alive!

Those are the best kind! It would be fun to have a collection of FR typos - some of them turn out to be useful turns of phrase.

Cheers!

By itself, it will lead to his re-election, Nobel Peace Prize or not.

Agree. We better get these commie clowns unto our side instead of China the same way we did in Germany after WW2.

I just watched an old PBS documentary about the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Mao was VERY committed to annihilating us. Of course he didn't, but he also was able to keep North Korea within his sphere.

The times are changing. While I don't consider the Chinese to be friends, I do think that they are being more pragmatic when it comes to world relations and trade. I can see where China would be more agreeable to opening up North Korea. I've read that North Korea has lots of mineral resource potential. I imagine the Chinese and the Norks would like to develop that.
