After failing to get promoted due to his recklessness and attitude, Maverick left the Navy and foundation job where his flying skills were appreciated, namely flying Columbian drugs into Mena, Ark.

Caught and imprisoned, he later began flying poppies out of Afghanistan for the CIA.

Now, the Navy needs him back to teach the lesbian and transgender cadets how to defeat evil Russian Mercanary pilots in Syria.

Have I missed anything?

Since there are an infinite number of ways to die,
that franchise could go on forever.

Actually, I like them.
Now if they would just make Final Destination DNC.

I can see it now, one killed by an exercise machine,
one killed by sex, one killed by heat exhaustion, etc, etc.

Val Kilmer December 2017:

From Wiki: "In May 2013, Kilmer lobbied Congress on behalf of Equitable Access to Care and Health Act, or EACH Act (H.R. 1814), a bill "to provide an additional religious exemption from the individual health coverage mandate" of Obamacare."

Could be worse.

WOW, that movie must be older than I realized, these guys are going to be landing on the wrong runways like Indiana Jones.

By now Maverick should be at least a Captain and the story will revolve around rambuctious young pilots that he and some fantastic female Lt Cdr squadron leader must save.

I had just turned Captain when it came out. Long retired now. But Chuck Yeager kept flying well past 60, and Tom Cruise is in his 50s.

I woulda figured that went for both the Navy *and* Air Force pilots. ;)

On a more general note, and more seriously, I suspect the plot will be “aging pilot Capt. (O-6) Maverick faces a generation of fighter jocks that now rely heavily on computers to do most of the flying, as well as an increasing use of drones that can (ostensibly) outfly any aircraft with an onboard human pilot, as well as aircraft that get more complex all the time. He has to maintain his intimidating image as the “Viper” of his generation, as well as showing his students and his superiors that there is still value in being able to fly without the gadgets, and that humans can still outfly drones, because otherwise he loses his post, and either gets kicked upstairs into a Desk Admiral job, or retires”.

What will be really interesting to see, is whether they play it as a comeback story where Maverick shows them, shows them all and “wins” a battle against a drone/gen-5 fighter due to his abilities, thus proving that human old-school skill still reigns supreme, or will it be a tragedy where he ends up outclassed despite demonstrating awesome skill, and has to accept fading off into the sunset, still a legend but now decisively overshadowed.

The teaser image for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which Cruise also posted on his Instagram page, featured the legend “Feel the need,”

... the need for Geritol!

Implausible as the 6’5” Jack Reacher, will cruise now try to convince us that a 50+ year-old Navy lieutenant wheezing himself into a fighter is credible?

Admiral? With his attitude he’d be lucky to make Lt Commander.

Go for broke and have the McCain character do something that sinks an American aircraft carrier.

As cliche as Hollywood is, you’ve probably nailed the plot. You only missed the female pilot who tries to fit in, and has to prove that she’s just as worthy a pilot as the guys.

I read that book when I was a teenager, and the movie came out later.

I was disappointed in things left out of it, but somehow in my mind, Steve McQueen is Papillon.

There were a few great scenes in that movie, especially when they stuck their heads out of the doors for haircuts or something. Have not seen it since the theater, now I want to.

He should be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog $hit out of Hong Kong in the new movie.

Oh, I’m sure there will be at least two or three female pilots. The main story is about Maverick, though, so I was focusing on that. In all likelihood, the girl pilots won’t be the plucky go-getters trying to prove they deserve to be there. They’ll likely be near or at the top of the class, capable of outflying most of the other candidates (the air combat version of the 110lb 5-foot nothing girl who can stomp a 6-foot guy in hand-to-hand).
