An FBI agent got himself into an embarrassing situation on Saturday when his service weapon fell out of its holster while dancing at a Denver club and he accidentally shot a fellow patron while retrieving it.
Denver police responded to Mile High Spirits Distillery and Tasting Bar for an accidental shooting at about 12:45 a.m. on Saturday. According to police, an off-duty FBI agent was dancing at the club when his firearm fell to the ground. He picked the gun up and it went off, shooting another person in the leg.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital in "good" condition, according to police.

However much time it takes, that might be more time than you can spare. I was carrying my Glock 23 on a hog hunt at night when a 350+ boar came at me out of nowhere while I was trying to tether a dog, and had one free hand. Had I taken the time to "rack the slide" he would have had me. When I carried my 1911, I always had it cocked. When it's my S&W 686, there'a always a full cylinder. As other's have said here, your finger is the primary safety mechanism. When my finger goes in the hole, I don't need any other mechanisms in the way.

I read that in Pacific jungle fighting in WWII the rule was to chamber a round, leaving the hammer cocked without engaging the thumb safety, and depend on the grip safety only.
Yup. That’s why Sigs are my favorite firearm for practice, training and serious work. I have a few 1911s that are the dessert at the end of the day. Gotta love the 1911 trigger.

An unchambered gun might as well not be loaded. I used to carry that way. In a situation where you are confronted with an attacker you may not be able to pull the slide. Also, if your hands are slick or sweaty in any way the slide will slip. I don’t have a Glock - my Rugers have actual safeties that I use.
How about keeping finger out of trigger guard and weapon pointed in safe direction. He totally screwed up firearms handling 101.
You've got to be kidding. What are you going to do? "Excuse me, Mr. Murderous Criminal, let me have a couple of seconds to load a round into my chamber?"
You're better off throwing the gun at him than carrying it unloaded. My Glock is ALWAYS carried loaded.

And by the way, I have practiced a proper draw, and carry in a proper holster. So, I won't be shooting myself.
I’ve been carrying (legally) since I was 21. I’ve never had a negligent discharge. Every gun I carry has a manual safety and every gun is loaded and chambered. And if it’s one of my 1911’s, yeah, it’s cocked and the safety is on. I carry anything from a smith 459 to a 1911 chambered in 10mm.
I don’t go into bars and drink when I’m armed, even though it’s legal I the state I’m in. I don’t allow my feet to go over my head. And if I’m going to be doing anything physical, I select a thumb break holster.
This guy is a disgrace to the bureau. Cops are supposed to be the safest firearms carriers there are. He injured someone who was co oletely innocent. I don’t know what the FBI’s protocol is in this situation, but he’s gonna be sitting down with his SAIC and discussing his career plans. And I would be moving for his career plans do not include law enforcement.
Oh yeah, and my finger doesn’t go inside the %*#^!#%* trigger guard until I’m ready to shoot!!

Most certainly that argument can be legitimately made. Personally I don’t anticipate a quick draw throwdown nor drawing on a gun pointed at me. I try and anticipate a situation and do what needs to be done at the appropriate time. I love my pinned and recessed old school S & W revolvers but there is no way I would carry them around eared back....which is essentially what Glocks are give or take 2 or 3 pounds trigger pull. I admit that Glocks are fascinating.
Rest assured that if Bob Q.Smith had had that “incident” occur on the “dance floor”, in a bar, acting the fool, he’d have been hauled off in cuffs and anally interrogated. Notice how nonchalantly the FIBer walks away after the round is discharged, put his hands up as if nothing was to be seen. Just moseying along.
