Class, discuss.
People who have faith are less likely to kill themselves or others? Who would have thought?
Gee, imagine that?
obama hasn’t attended any church service yet he’s still walking...
If you are assisting at Mass more than once a week you more than likely going to confession on a regular basis which besides the obvious spiritual benefit to your soul is wonderful for your mental and emotional health too.
Possibly of interest
Christianity is a cure for anomie.
The soulless philosophies of atheism and secular humanism are utterly devoid of hope and that’s why so many of their adherents seek the abyss.
Hope is found at the foot of the Cross.
So being Catholic is probably a good way of not being Arkancided.
And what school shootings? Far more happen in public schools, not so much in Catholic schools...
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. 2Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. 3If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? 4But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. 5I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. 6My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. 7Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. 8And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
Must be true. I’ve attended church regularly since 1985 and have never committed suicide.
". . . He will reveal himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in His fellowship, and, as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience Who He is." Albert Schweitzer, 'The Quest for the Historical Jesus'
Even if it's only someone to talk and discuss your problems and issues with it helps but those who attend, pun intended, religiously also know that their church members will try to help in any way they can.
It can make a big difference if you know that someone knows what you're going through, cares about you, and are trying to help.
It’s also likely that those prone to suicide are more likely to quit going to church as opposed to quitting church tends to lend itself to more suicide.
Funny, my non-Catholic friends tell me "It isn't necessary to tell your sins to a priest.." yada yada yada.
Too bad! They have never experienced the power of the confessional. It can be sometimes felt as a humbling task, true, and it is not always the easiest thing to do, but it really does work amazing wonders for the mind and the soul, doesn't it?
