Michigan Democrats propose lowering voting age to 16 BY JUSTIN WISE 34 TWEET SHARE MORE Two Michigan state lawmakers have introduced a proposal that would lower the voting age to 16 for state elections.

Rep. Yousef Rabhi (D) and Sen. David Knezek (D) introduced bills in both the House and Senate on Tuesday.

Knezek told the Detroit Free Press that 16-year-olds should be able to vote if they are old enough to get a job and pay taxes.

"Young people are setting aside their differences and identifying issues they think need to change," he said, referring to the outpouring of student activism in the wake of recent school shootings. "And they can do everything to get that change except vote." Changes to the U.S. and Michigan constitutions would be needed to lower the voting age, the Free Press noted, adding that a supermajority in the state's House and the Senate would be required to change the state's Constitution. That's not likely, it said, considering Republicans control both chambers.

Congress would also have to pass a measure and then send it back to the states for ratification. The nationwide voting age was last changed in 1971, from 21 to 18.

"People are trying to turn this into a partisan issue, but it’s a voting issue," Knezek said. "It’s integral in ensuring our democracy can survive in the United States."

After a school shooting in Parkland, Fla., left 17 people dead, students from around the country have led protests to keep conversations about gun violence at the center of the news. Students have targeted their efforts at the National Rifle Association and politicians who have received donations from the group.

Students from Parkland announced in early June they'd be going on a nationwide bus tour to register young people to vote.

How about ‘learner’s permits’ for voting- must be with an adult voter...

No problem! The Democrat machine already helps the senile & mentally feeble when they vote.

They could’t fight a war because they are too afraid of those evil guns.

Nothing but a bunch of snowflakes.

Not only a very bad idea but rather astonishingly stupid.

Not so!

If you really, really need to steal elections, this is a great idea.

The Dems in Michigan are admitting they’re in deep trouble when they propose lowering the voting age so the young “skulls full of mush” in the public schools they’ve brainwashed can vote for them. Illegal aliens and high school students are two constituent groups the Democrats hope will save their party nationally.

Voting age should be a variable number.

Not everyone matures at the same age, and not everyone learns about being responsible and holding down job and raising a family and buying a house and trying to keep as much of their money away from the big government bureaucrats.

Mostly, people don’t all have the same knowledge-base and life experiences and time to grow some wisdom.

Some might be able to vote at 21, others at 30 or more, and others might never qualify to vote.

Democrats want the uninformed and over-emotional to vote.. That is the only hope they have of winning anything.

Dems have zero power in Michigan for a reason.

It won’t go anywhere:

MI has a republican President of the United States.

MI has a republican, conservative Supreme Court.

MI has a republican Governor.

MI has a republican Lieutenant Governor.

MI has a republican State Senate.

MI has a republican House of Representatives.

MI has a republican Attorney General.

MI has a republican Secretary of State.

MI has a republican congressional margin by a 2:1 ratio.

There is NO state democrat that is elected statewide. NONE.

Too easy to screw over valid voters. I get the sentiment though.

This should never be allowed. 16 year olds are not mature and have no skin in the game. They are still in school and do npt pay taxes or know how the way they vote can affect their future.

Why not 14? Oh yeah, some California Democrats already proposed that.

Maybe 12 then.

Democrats have a wet dream of NEA public school teachers shepherding their classes to the polls to vote Democrat.

Personally, I like Robert Heinlein’s voting scheme from the “Starship Troopers” universe: Only military veterans get the vote. Everyone else gets all their rights under the Constitution. But unless you were willing to fight for those rights, you don’t get the vote.

You don't have to be a veteran to vote, you have to have completed Federal Service. From the Starship Troopers wiki:

Citizens are people who joined the Federal Service and were honorably discharged and given franchise. Joining the Federal Service does not necessarily mean the military, and applicants may be assigned to any field where they sacrifice their time and effort for the Federation (Teaching, any of the civil services, experimental test subjects, etc), though military service is the most glorified. It all falls under Federal Service.

The Tide Pod vote?

I think it should be raised to 25, the average age that the human brain is finally fully developed.
