It just doesn’t work like that. Of course they should be, but eventually anything you do all day long becomes routine. A warship cannot remain at general quarters all day long.
And don’t underestimate a sociopath like him being friendly, deferential, and cooperative to relax them and put them at ease...until that split second he explodes into sudden violence. Don’t forget, he has made that trip dozens of times before.
