ER doctor caught on video cursing out patient is suspended

An emergency room doctor at a Northern California hospital has been suspended after she was caught on video allegedly ridiculing a patient after he collapsed from an apparent anxiety attack.

Samuel Bardwell, a 20-year-old student at West Valley College in Saratoga, made a trip to the El Camino Hospital Los Gatos after passing out during a basketball practice on June 11, The Mercury News reported.

Beth Keegstra, the ER doctor who attended to Bardwell — who reportedly was unable to speak and was numb at the time — seemingly didn't take the man's health claims seriously when she was caught on camera allegedly mocking him.

"Sir, you are the least sick of all the people who are here, who are dying," Keegstra is heard saying in a video recorded by Bardwell's father, Donald. "There, you picked your head up. Now don't try to tell me you can't move. C'mon, sit up."

The doctor, who Bardwell reportedly waited four hours to see, begins to loudly tell the 20-year-old to "sit up" and is seen trying to push him upwards on the hospital bed.

"She's literally yanking my arm," Bardwell says, repeatedly telling Keegstra he can't physically sit up.

"You want us to wheel you to your house in the gurney?" the doctor quips, before laughing at Bardwell as he says it's difficult for him to inhale.

"He can't inhale, wow! He must be dead! Are you dead, sir?" Keegstra says, later adding "this is ridiculous."

Since daddy didn’t immediately say his son had gone off to war and suffered PTSD and since I know the area and the counseling community the PatSD could have been that he got yelled at as a child

In addition to being off his medications, he might have been dehydrated or his blood sugar level might have dropped too low.

My brother in law is a doctor and some of the stories he can tell about the ER are mind blowing. Some people as already posted, a sinus infection, constipated, an ingrown toe nail, things they could go to their family doctor for but because they have a state card or have no intention of paying for services rendered anyway, just go to the ER. He had one lady who had to wait for an hour to get in and chewed him out because she had missed the Jerry Springer show. She had a cold...

The worst of the worst are the pill heads. Their back always hurts, give me something. You pull their records and many have a record of an MRI and xrays and nothing is present but give me a scrip for pain. What a waste of time for doctors.

On the other end I had a lady friend in her early 60’s who is normally quite healthy turn violently ill from pain in her side and stomach one evening and she eventually had to go to the ER, as she was in agony. She described her pain and the doctor examined her, ordered no tests and walked out of the room.

The doctor walks back in and hands her a script for pain meds and she said what is this? Oh a prescription for the pain take it and if it still hurts go to your regular doctor or come back tomorrow. She wadded it up and threw it at him and said I am not some damned pill head looking for a hit, now you either try and find out what is causing this pain or send me a real doctor who will!!! He sent in another doctor. Turns out it was her gallbladder needing removed.

“Pat him on the head, give him a sugar pill and send him home with a referral to a psychiatrist.”

I believe the patient is a drama Ka-Ween.

Anxiety attacks don’t kill people.

The people having them don't know that, dumbass.

Except that’s not what got told to the ER. Kid had multiple stories. The doc says that. That is characteristic of those abusing an ER

It's also the characteristic of kids that don't know how to articulate medical problems in a cogent fashion.

You obviously have a bad case of whatever the ER doc has; you think your assumptions are as good as due diligence.

Well self righteous name caller that’s not the ER’s fault

Anxiety has always been best handled by CBT

Either way, it still definitively confutes your assertion.

Please show even one piece of evidence from the article that backs your position WITHOUT making inferences.

"Self-Righteous" is the rallying cry of the "caught."

How is a kid supposed to know the difference between anxiety and organic pathologies?

I got a call at work from my husband telling me he was going to the ER as he did not feel good. I met him there, after hours the doctors said the pain was from gastroenteritis. They gave him some strong pain pills and sent him home.

Next day he was getting out of the tub and almost fainted from the pain. I took him back to the ER. Somewhere between six and eight hours later they finally decided to do a CAT. Mainly because I made it plain that I was not taking him home again. He was in so much pain that I knew something was seriously wrong.

I was ready to turn the doctor upside down and shake until answers fell out.

Appendicitis not gastroenteritis.

Oops!

Emergency surgery and it burst as they were bagging it.
