Factcheck Q&A: Detaining children at the border

The controversy surrounding family separations at the U.S. southern border has prompted outrage, opinions and finger-pointing. It has also raised a number of questions, including from our readers.

"Are there really children being separated from their parents at the border and being kept in cages?" one reader asked.

We answer that and (other questions here.)

[snip]As we've explained before, parents are sent to federal court under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and then placed in a detention center, according to Homeland Security. In turn, their children — minors who cannot be housed in detention centers for adults — are transferred to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for placement in a juvenile facility or foster care if they can't be placed with another adult relative in the U.S. Those children, as well as those who cross without adults, are considered "unaccompanied" and become the responsibility of HHS' Office of Refugee Resettlement.

What we're hearing from the left is pure Propaganda meant to hurt President Trump (surprise) and muddy the law. Elijah Cummings is lying about "kiddie concentration camps" Laws are broken and if you have a child you put in harms way...there are consequences even for illegal aliens.

Any chain linked area can be called a cage. In this case, “Cages” are large chain linked enclosures. Kids cannot be kept in one large open group. The fence separates them by age and maybe sophistication. You wouldn’t put a 15 year old MS 13 in with a 7 year old. The older and stronger will abuse the others. Also if there is a group problem the staff cannot handle 200 as well as they can smaller groups kept separated.

Chain link was used by Obama because he let so many minors in they didn’t have enough detention facilities to accommodate them. It can be installed easily. Chain link is “see thru. The kids are safer in that than cement block cells where staff have to peek in the door window every now and then. wife for suicide and other mischief.
.
Liberals and people out to blame everything including the weather on trump are using emotions instead of logic on these claims. These kids are kept up to 3 weeks. They were not with their parents when they were caught. They should donate money to their countries and blame their parents, not the man who is trying to stop this.

...Liberals and people out to blame everything including the weather on trump are using emotions instead of logic on these claims...

We all know by now that emotion is the main driving force of liberalism. No matter what the issue is, such as gun control, it will likely be emotionally driven.

I will just leave this right here...

“In March of 1993, The United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in Reno v Flores. (Yes, “That” Reno. Janet Reno, Bill Clinton’s first Attorney General who ordered that young Elian Gonzalez be torn from his family’s arms while hiding in a Miami closet. You might remember the iconic photograph.)

The Court in Flores decided that minors could not be incarcerated with the adults accompanying them across the United States border illegally. The decision was the result of a long dispute in how to best care for these children while the adults were detained for criminal proceedings.

You see, when aliens cross the border illegally, they are incarcerated until their criminal case is decided. The understandable argument at the time was “why should children be incarcerated while their parents are in jail?” It seemed a fundamental violation of international human rights. Makes sense, right?

As a result, The Flores case drew a line in the sand. Children could not be incarcerated with their parents or accompanying adult while being held for illegal immigration violations. And a subsequent 1997 agreement stipulated that children must be placed in a safer environment where they could enjoy certain privileges, including education, a clean, safe environment and other normal life cycle amenities that incarcerated individuals do not enjoy.

It was considered a “victory” for human rights. By separating adult and child, we protected the children, reducing any harm done to them for their parent’s or accompanying adult’s decisions.

A lot has happened since then. However; bottom line, these juvenile, shelters have been operating in accordance with the law, and overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services to protect those children from the hazards of parental incarceration since 1997.

So, since Donald Trump was running his real estate empire, selling wine and casinos in 1993, we are left to determine just how he managed to orchestrate this cruel “separation of immigrant parent and child” 25 years BEFORE he was President of the United States. The obvious answer is, he didn’t. He had nothing to do with establishing this United States immigration policy. Today, he simply enforces it.

This one story illustrates how important it is for us to do our research regarding today’s headlines. The Corporate Media either refuses to do the research, is incapable of doing the research or has done the research and decided to lie to you about its findings. Either way, this would make the Corporate Media lazy, incompetent or just plain deceptive. Liars, if you will.”

from the story:

Perhaps this is Trump’s chance to fire Sessions and beat the deep state and Judas Sessions at their own game. I’m guessing Sessions started this mess in close conjunction with the media for the primary reason to lose fall elections. Fire Sessions and say that you find his handling of this situation to be reprehensible. Then just start turning everyone back immediately as soon as they are caught.

1988 - Democrats have majorities in both Houses, when they pass 8 CFR 242.24 on removing juveniles to family or other detention facilities.

1993 - Liberal icon Janet Reno wins a SCOTUS case, 7-2, supporting the removal of children from detained parents for the good of the children.

2018 - "Trump is a Nazi!" (for following Democrat laws and Liberal icon SCOTUS victories)

“Then just start turning everyone back immediately as soon as they are caught.”

That is the Zero tolerance policy Sessions put in place.

There is NO real Outrage in this country, it is just the few in Hollywood and the media, NOT THE PEOPLE!

These people are almost all from countries south of Mexico (Mexicans are returned immediately) and traveled here on foot, in cattle cars, or stowaways on trains or trucks. For the most part, they had to sleep wherever they could find a place and ate whatever they could get. There was no security and many suffered assault and other deprivations. When they crossed the border and were taken into custody, their life immediately changed for the better.

They are housed in air conditioned shelters, fed three meals a day, provided showers and toilet facilities and most of all physical security. Children are separated from the adults, not as punishment but for their own security. Despite the images being shown, the children are not being locked in cages like animals but are actually being protected from human predators by security fencing.

Many people pushing the idea of inhumane treatment know better and are angling for political advantage. Those misguided individuals who live in a dream world and don’t know any better need to visit any large city in this country and spend a night walking the streets of one of the rougher neighborhoods. They would find that many American citizens, especially children live permanently in much worse conditions with no way out. In contrast, the illegal alien can alleviate his condition, including reuniting his family, at any time by simply requesting to be returned home.

Crossing the border illegally is a SERIOUS crime, and 98% of the crossing are related to human trafficking, drug activity. Of those, 60% are related to MS-13. Only about 2% of illegals are looking for work.

No president has ever allowed the border patrol to start shooting the illegals as they cross, and I don’t expect Trump to do so. But that means the border patrol is in a tough spot. We have to stop the flood of felons. This is a good idea. But those children ought to be taken away permanently.

The law allows if they plead for asylum they are to be held until their case is adjudicated. If they bring their family to an official port of entry they can stay their with the family. If those facilities are filled they can leave the US with their families intact. They avoid those places and therefor when caught as criminals the children are separated.

Once they are in Mexico, why are they not granted asylum there?

Obama was allowing them to go into America with a court hearing ticket that the so called refugees simply ignored. Thus becoming illegals. It is all Kabuki theater.

A DNC orchestrated propaganda ploy to take advantage of it. Aided by Mexico.

I would hit Mexico right between the eyes if I were Trump.
