The owner of the Red Hen explains why she asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave
The Washington Post ^ | 06/23/18 | Avi Selk

Posted on 06/23/2018 1:56:12 PM PDT by Simon Green

Stephanie Wilkinson was at home Friday evening — nearly 200 miles from the White House — when the choice presented itself.

Her phone rang about 8 p.m. It was the chef at the Red Hen, the tiny farm-to-table restaurant that she co-owned just off Main Street in Lexington, Va.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders had just walked in and sat down, the chef informed her.

“He said the staff is a little concerned. What should we do?” Wilkinson told The Washington Post. “I said I’d be down to see if it’s true.”

It seemed unlikely to her that President Trump’s press secretary should be dining at a 26-seat restaurant in rural Virginia. But then, it was unlikely that her entire staff would have misidentified Sanders, who had arrived last to a table of eight booked under her husband’s name.

As she made the short drive to the Red Hen, Wilkinson knew only this:

She knew Lexington, population 7,000, had voted overwhelmingly against Trump in a county that voted overwhelmingly for him. She knew the community was deeply divided over such issues as Confederate flags. She knew, she said, that her restaurant and its half-dozen servers and cooks had managed to stay in business for 10 years by keeping politics off the menu.

And she knew — she believed — that Sarah Huckabee Sanders worked in the service of an “inhumane and unethical” administration. That she publicly defended the president’s cruelest policies, and that that could not stand.

“I’m not a huge fan of confrontation,” Wilkinson said. “I have a business, and I want the business to thrive. This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”

Stuff like that is why I pay no attention to Internet review sites.

ROFL! I suspect their ratings have just tanked.

VMI is in Lexington! Not a good town to be a commie bigot.

There is something very Biblical about a free country dividing into two groups on the basis of value systems.

The left have decided to cast themselves in the role of the angels of light, but we were warned about that from the outset, a long time before America even existed.

The “tell” is the alliance with sexual perversion in many forms. This allows us to be sure that the less obvious choices are also falling into a broad spectrum of right and wrong.

It is perhaps easier for the left to try to sell compassion for the migrants than solidarity with transgendered and gays, on the face of it, compassion for the poor is what a Christian should support. However, we are doing nobody any favors by allowing a steady stream of illegals into any western country, it just further destroys the social fabric of the countries that produce these migrants and leads to two different wrong outcomes, the collapse of the home country’s social structure as more functional citizens stream out, and the collapse of functional societies as those people stream in without adequate preparation for the large scale changes they will need to make.

I think the only solution is a broad consensus that solutions must be found in the home countries, and whatever we can do to assist in that would be worthwhile, but ultimately the responsibility lies with those people and their governments. There is nothing to prevent a country like Honduras or El Salvador from enforcing the law, protecting the people who feel they must leave to survive, and creating the same sort of free society that attracts migrants to come to western countries. The only thing that does prevent this seems to be the political corruption of those particular nations, but this is a problem for their citizens to solve, just as political corruption in our countries is a problem for us to solve.

As to the Red Hen and businesses like that, I wish they would all post signs saying “Trump supporters unwelcome here” so we would know in advance and perhaps choose to patronize businesses that posted “all welcome” — I don’t encourage anyone on the right to engage in similar behavior although I support any business owner’s right to choose who may enter their establishment — ideally politics should be left at the door of any non-political type of enterprise or society of any kind (for example, a golf course, or a hotel or a restaurant). There are appropriate times and places for political debate and there are times that should be free from it.

The county Lexington resides in is solidly red. Would be funny if folks around there started making reservations, showing up and packing the place, then order the lowest price thing on the menu for the table — get served, then leave. No tip.

The place would be shut down in a month.

when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals

Stephanie Wilkinson has no morals to uphold - she is a bigot, pure and simple...

Lexington is not a county; it is a city.

There are two types of political subdivisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia: counties and cities.

A citizen of the Commonwealth resides in either a city or a county. One is not a subset of the other.

I should add that I am aware that not all the migrants are “more functional citizens” which is fairly obvious from the rise of MS-13 gangs in America, but even if most of the migrants are the better half of the citizenry of their home countries it is still not a good idea to promote illegal immigration. By all means encourage legal immigration to fill labor market requirements, there is really no other viable reason to increase the population of the U.S. and most other western countries.

From the election:
Rockbridge County: Trump=6,671 Clinton=3,506 0.655%
City of Lexington: Trump=766 Clinton=1,514 0.664%

Just a quick perusal of the city and county tells me that the area is overwhelmingly pro-Trump. The city is a small, touristy city inhabited by liberals trying to turn the city into an arts center in the mountains.

What a load of BS. What should we do? You are a chef in a restaurant. How about feeding her and her party!
