Fox News commentator apologizes for racist remark
CNN ^ | 6/18 | Brian Stelter

News is distancing itself from a racist remark made by one of its paid commentators on Sunday.

The commentator, David Bossie, was arguing on "Fox & Friends" with Democratic strategist Joel Payne, who is black. He told Payne, "you're out of your cotton-picking mind."

Payne was stunned by the remark. He told Bossie had had "some relatives who picked cotton, and I'm not going to sit back and let you attack me on TV like that."

Bossie, a veteran conservative activist, was a deputy campaign manager on the Trump campaign. He also served as a deputy director of Trump's transition team. He joined Fox News in February 2017.

I’m not the slightest bit angry at David Bosse about his use of the phrase.

While I’m not from the South, I do know plenty of folk who’s own family owned farms and planted cotton. Most picked their own cotton, if they had enough family to do so or hired day laborers to help. Not only were none slaves, none were black!

I’m certain I’ve heard that term used more than a few times on television and in movies, especially by Southerners.

I’m also sure I’ve heard Andy Griffith use the term in both of his hit TV shows as well as some country singers a time or two.

Were they racist, not one little bit!

Who I am angry at is Ed Henry and most especially at the “fair and balanced” Fox News!!!

Some snowflake must have gotten to Ed at commercial break to inform him Bosse “just screamed the ‘N’ word” on their national network and the audience needed to be helped to a “safe space” to deal with their shock and awe!

I tried contacting Fox and Ed to let them know I’m incensed with their pc and just about out of any and all patience, but found. I way to contact them.

I had to get on with my day before totally losing it over their Animal Farm ignorance over language that can and can no longer be uttered in public!

Who knew Charles Payne would morph into a delicate doily? Disappointed in him.

Yes, one we’ve all probably said. I know I have. Has nothing to do with race.

Thousands of whites picked cotton.

Mechanization of cotton picking didn’t happen until 1943 when International Harvester produced seven machines. Machine picking of cotton was the last harvesting process on the farm to be mechanized. One, the process was difficult to perfect. Two, cheap labor tended to put off machine development, and three, there was a lot of social resistance as even the first machines available could replace 30 workers, and I’ve heard from an old boy who used to hand pick (he’s white BTW) that the real number is closer to 50.

My mom and her siblings picked cotton and harvested many other crops in the 1940’s. School was even suspended while they did so.

He told Payne, "you're out of your cotton-picking mind."

He should have told Payne that he needed to stop speaking English then, since it is cultural appropriation.

I’m many, many, many generations removed from this. So is he.

I have never seen real cotton balls, or seen it being picked. In fact it is a chore to find a 100% cotton blouse.

So, excuse me.

“Plenty of poor whites have picked cotton.”

There were more poor whites picking cotton than black slaves. Hell the Irish were treated worse than the slaves were.
