At least 17 civilians have been killed in an air strike on a basement shelter in south-western Syria, activists say, as warplanes pound rebel-held areas.
A monitoring group reported that five children were among those who died when aircraft identified as Russian bombed Musayfira, east of the city of Deraa.
Russia is backing an army offensive in the region, which borders Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
More than 90 civilians are said to have been killed since it began 11 days ago.
The provinces of Deraa and Quneitra had been relatively calm for almost a year because of a "de-escalation" agreement brokered by the US and Jordan, which support the opposition, and Russia, a key ally of the government.
However, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad set his sights on retaking them after defeating rebels in the Eastern Ghouta region outside Damascus in April.

Wow “children and hospital” propaganda has been used since WW1. Can’t these activist groups and their tame whores at the BBC come up with better propaganda then this?
BBC is shameless.
Remember the “dead Syrian child” washed up on the shore during the 2015 invasion of Europe?
Women & Children = wives and kids of terrorists.
Untrustworthy. Information coming from the BBC has just as much chance being completely false as being true. They are not a credible organization. Same with the old-line US media outlets.
Some BBC writers are actually propagandists. FACT
Especially if they are based in Turkey. (have not looked at this author’s bio, but have seen it before)
This interview by the BBC harlot is proof that you speak the truth.
My blood boils just hearing her shriek above “diversity” (AKA Suicide of Europe).
Meant “about” not above.
Poland, Hungary and CZ are not fooled by the BBC and other attempts to project propaganda.
That is a good thing. US media is totally worthless on foreign affairs, with a very few exceptions. Absolute worst are CNN and MSNBC. With a whole list of chicks following them.
The “ de escalation zone” provides cover over one of the diminishjng areas of Syria where villages and captured kidnapped hostages are held captive by cruel radical islamist militias including ISIS.
Ask the Syrian people of Ghouta Aleppo Damascus and Homs how they felt about being liberated by their national army the SAA.
These radicals are given fair opportunity to surrender and join the national army, or to be evacuated with their families to Idlib. Those choosing to stay and fight refuse to let civilians leave and put them in harms way as shields.
Its a tragedy for 90 civilians to die but its also a dam miracle considering the difficulty of the battle and the fanatacism of the enemy. By comparison to how the Russians and Syrians are fighting - look at the rubble and casualties of Raqqa and Mosul after we “ liberated” them.
Btw notice the report that Assad is fighting “ rebels”
Aka ISIS and al Qaeda
Thats like calling MS-13 “rebels” and letting them “ peacefully “ control swaths of America in “ de escalation zones”
Update: I am reading that the Russians are working hard to get these radicals to accept generous terms that havent been offered to other militants - such as staying in the area and forming police and local govt organizations - in return for surrendering weapons and working with Jordan and Russia to allow return of refugees
Its a Saudi backed war against Syria’s government and Saudi money means something to debt ridden nations like the UK and the USA as well.
So we have the BBCKSA, the “British Broadcasting Corporation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”.
Peter Hitchens wonders out loud what is going on with a latest blog post yesterday on US support and “chemical attacks” in Syria.

Interesting - thanks for the update!
