July 18, 2018

The owners of a Pennsylvania farm have been ordered by the Sewickley Heights Borough to cease and desist holding Bible studies on their private property.

Borough leaders accused Scott and Terri Fetterolf of improperly using their 35-acre farm as a place of worship, a place of assembly and as a commercial venue. They were served a cease-and-desist order in October 2017, the Post-Gazette reported.

"I’d suggest the owners of the farm stop the Bible studies and start a meth lab. Very quiet operation. Perhaps the neighbors will then STFU."

ROFL!

They might shut up unless they imbibed in the meth.

Just discovered a similar situation here in Rio Rancho, NM.

It seems that if you set up a table at an event and sell anything - cookies, crafts, whatever - you are supposed to pay a $100 per table fee to the city. The only exception on the books is for city-sponsored functions.

We have two big gatherings annually in town, both city sponsored, but that is it.

The city has been smart in not enforcing this ordinance in conjunction with church events, but they technically have a right to do so.

I am on the board of the local Chamber of Commerce. We were looking at hosting a new event - Tails and Ales - here in town. It would involve local breweries offering samples and selling their wares, and local pet supply stores doing the same. The $100 a table fee has forced us to move the event to Albuquerque, where the permitting and approval process has been a breeze.

When I confronted a city official about the ordinance, I was informed that it existed to protect local businesses from unfair competition.

So we protect our local businesses by discouraging them from participating in festivals and events.

Genius.

Is the venue charging for these events? It reads as if much more than simple Bible study groups are being held. Those in and of themselves certainly owe no explanation to the Borough. But if events that are commercial in nature are taking place than the “farm” is subject to ordinances and regulations governing those.

They should also keep in mind there are groups that target such places to see if they will refuse hosting a same-sex wedding. And we all know where that leads.

But zoning laws are public knowledge and readily available to be examined before a property is purchased.

Exactly. The headline itself is totally biased.

Yes -- the township is ordering the owners to stop their Bible gatherings. But they're also being ordered to stop other commercial activities that have nothing to do with religious freedom.

I suspect the traffic on the local roads is what precipitated the neighbors’ complaints.
