Thomas will likely retire next year. Give Trump a second term and he may be able to replace two more of the liberal wing given the age and health problems. I am surprised that so many justices stay as long as they do.
I don't think the goal is even to derail his nomination. Perhaps they are trying to deter other conservatives. How many put country ahead of family and would be willing to allow their wives to be dragged through the mud by the Fake News media? Many are that patriotic, but I imagine others who would be great judges are more protective of their wives.
