Senate set for rare all-night session ahead of Kavanaugh vote

The Senate is expected to stay in session all night Friday as senators brace for a final vote Saturday afternoon on Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination.

The Senate voted 51-49 earlier Friday to advance Kavanaugh's nomination. Under the chamber's rules, senators have an additional 30 hours to debate his nomination before a final vote takes place.

Senators are expected to burn up the 30 hours of debate by staying up all night to give speeches on Kavanaugh's nomination from the Senate floor.

A spokesman for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said they believed Democrats wanted to speak from the Senate floor throughout Friday night and into Saturday. A Senate Democratic aide confirmed the Senate would be in session all night.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), a potential 2020 presidential candidate, was among those slated to begin speaking on Friday night, according to an advisory circulated by his office.

The rare all-night session comes as Kavanaugh appears to be a lock for confirmation.

GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) announced from the Senate floor on Friday that she would support Kavanaugh's nomination, clinching the 50th vote he needed to be confirmed.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) quickly announced after Collins that he would support Kavanaugh, making him the only Democrat expected to vote for him.

Republicans have a narrow 51-seat majority, meaning they can afford to lose one GOP senator before they needed help from Democrats.

GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) voted against advancing Kavanaugh's nomination earlier Friday. She didn't specifically say at the time that she would also oppose him on final confirmation but is viewed by leadership as a likely no vote.

Wouldn’t it be remarkable if one or two Republicans used their time to lay out in detail the entire Deep State plot and operation to scuttle Kavanaugh’s nomination and to completely destroy his reputation? It would be even better if they announced the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to investigate how the FBI set the entire operation up.

Quoting the judicial requirement that a judge should act as all times as, well, a judge. It’s clear she says that the hearing showed impropriety by the judge.

Just more pathetic grandstanding by dems trying to con people into voting for them. I don’t even have to listen, I know what they will be saying ‘We are the party that believes a women when she claims she was assaulted by a man (except women Bill Clinton assaulted)

Murky

We won’t forget.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That picture of Senator Murkowski with her mouth open like that kinda reminds me of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when they opened the Ark and then the bad guys melted.

They don’t hold themselves to those rules. What a 100 or so Congress critters that cost taxpayers 17M to protect themselves for sexual harassment claims. Yeah Ok, whatever. Let’s not even talk about getting drunk and driving off a bridge and leaving a woman to die..Oh yes, that was the DMES Lion of the Senate.

Don’t bother to look at his temperament while he has been a judge, just judge him for one day.

They should just go home, get a goodnight’s sleep and come in fresh and rested and vote to confirm K.

How many people here have seen the picture of MURKOWSKI getting the law laid down by FEINSTEIN? Even Rush was talking about it today.

Yes, that is Murky's reason for not supporting him.

The Cow now on. Praises Kavanaugh as a good man but will vote no.

In practice, Murkowski will vote present out of respect for Daines and it will effectively be a “yes” vote for Kavanaugh.

She said she would vote present out of her friendship with Daines.

Bought fellow Weak Sister Collins arguments. Reminds me why she is on our side.
