Former FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe reportedly talked with the agency's top lawyer after deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein suggested that administration officials wiretap President Trump.
The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the episode, reported on Tuesday that in 2017 McCabe told the lawyer, James Baker, that Rosenstein had discussed secretly taping the president to see if Trump had obstructed justice.
McCabe then asked Baker how the FBI should address the deputy attorney general's suggestion. Baker reportedly dismissed the idea.
Baker, however, told congressional investigators this week that Rosenstein's dramatic suggestion had been presented to him as being serious, according to The Post.
The revelations would contradict Rosenstein's denials last month about the New York Times report that said he discussed secretly taping the president and potentially invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
"I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President is absolutely false," Rosenstein said in a statement.
The Washington Post noted that Baker was not at the alleged meeting in which Rosenstein suggested wiretapping Trump. Democratic aides familiar with the lawyer's testimony told the newspaper that he couldn't recall whether McCabe or former FBI lawyer Lisa Page was the one to recount the interaction to him.
McCabe reportedly wrote a memo about Rosenstein's suggestion and has said that the No. 2 ranking Justice Department official discussed taping Trump multiple times.
Speculation grew that Rosenstein would be fired or that he would resign after the New York Times report. But, earlier this week Trump said he has no plans to dismiss Rosenstein.
Rosenstein was scheduled to meet with a pair of House committees this week. But that meeting was postponed on Wednesday.
A House Judiciary Committee aide told The Hill that it is unclear when Rosenstein will appear on Capitol Hill.
The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Hill has also reached out Michael Bromwich's office, an attorney for McCabe.
So there is a paper trail.
So there is a paper trail.
Sure. From the guy fired for lying under oath to his own FBI. Does anyone believe Comey,McCabe or Strzok memos. Lets get real here. The only people saying Rosenstein did this are the same people who have been trying to take Trump out.
I dont like Rosenstein and hes overstepped his authority with the parameters of this Special Counsel, but my hypocrisy only goes so far....
It’s clear to me, Rosenstein & the Deep State have something on Trump. Here’s a guy who talks about secretly taping Trump, he put Mueller in place to pour over every aspect of Trump’s career looking for something they can use to impeach him and Rosenstein refused for over the last year and a half to release documents that Nunes and his committee have subpoenaed...
Yet Trump didn’t fire this political hack? Now it’s clear it wasn’t a joke, Rosenstein was serious. If Trump hasn’t fired him by the end of the week, then The Swamp has something on Trump.
I never pursued or authorized recording the President
Note he never says he didn’t say it.
People need to keep in mind McCabe is rotten to the core.
The goal is an "every rat for himself" deal-making market. The whole story will out.
I think this article is inaccurate or what McCabe said was inaccurate. The recording was not to uncover obstruction of justice, it was to expose “chaos”in the oval office. Or so it was first reported.
Wow - what a stretch...do you really believe that if they had something they wouldn’t have used it by now? President Trump has been walking rough shod over them and they have to be tired of squealing without getting any satisfaction...
The fact that Rosenstein was even part of a meeting where this was discussed and he did not bring it to the attention of the President is enough to fire him. He needs to go like yesterday.
Rosenstein got caught with his fingers in the cookie are. He's been exposed.
He's being watched like a hawk. Rosenstein now has to be on his best behavior.
He's essentially been neutered.
So far Trump has proved that he knows what he is doing. Let’s hope that continues. Remember the old saying, keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
He has to be on his best behavior, or what?
He gets fired?
Why not fire him now?
I don't think it's a matter of "keeping your enemies close". I believe it's just a matter of timing. I think Rosenstein will be gone in 4 weeks.
Lol so we believe McCabe now lol. And supposed to believe the guy that tried to take down trump? But not believe the guy trump hired and says he likes Rosenstein. Rosenstein is guy who took the Russian investigation away from the guy who was trying to frame trump. Baffles me people will believe and trust everyone but trump. But soon everyone will see Rosenstein and sessions as heroes
Name the wager . Rosenstein trump and sessions are the ones who met Mueller 12 hrs before he was hired. You think trump is incompetent? You think trump is stupid? You would have to if you think trump is keeping Rosenstein around for these reasons. Trump is a genius everyone needs to watch trumps interview with lester holt after he fired Comey. All answers are in that interview
Go back and read what I said. I said it's a matter of Trump timing the firing of Rosenstein.
How you come to ask those two rhetorical questions is beyond logic.
All answers are in that interview.
No, all the answers are in what Donald Trump has been telling us over and over again for 18 months. All the answers are in the Jeff Sessions recusals. Sessions is recused. Sessions is doing nothing.
And all the answers are in Rod Rosenstein actions.
Rosenstein is the guy who hired Mueller, extended the Mueller investigation, supported the bogus prosecution of Gen. Flynn, signed off on a bogus FISA warrant application, repeatedly stonewalled Congress, threatened the staff of Jim Jordan, buried the 2015 Uranium One investigation ignoring key witnesses, whitewashed the Clinton Travelgate investigation, married a Clinton suck-up and perhaps spied on Trump for the purposes of invoking the 25th amendment.
Four weeks from now, Rosenweasel will be gone and probably Jeff Sessions too.
No it's your rhetorical questions that I think are stupid.
