Trump: 'Robert E. Lee was a great general'
The Hill ^ | 10/12/18 | CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO

Posted on 10/12/2018 7:13:42 PM PDT by yesthatjallen

President Trump praised Confederate Geader Robert E. Lee as "a great general" on Friday during a campaign rally in Lebanon, Ohio.

"So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee," Trump said before launching into a monologue about Lee, Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.

"He was going crazy. I don’t know if you know this story. But Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle. And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can’t beat Robert E. Lee,'" Trump said.

"And he had all of his generals, they looked great, they were the top of their class at West Point. They were the greatest people. There’s only one problem — they didn’t know how the hell to win. They didn’t know how to fight. They didn’t know how," he continued.

Trump went on to say, multiple times, that Grant had a drinking problem, saying that the former president "knocked the hell out of everyone" as a Union general.

"Man was he a good general. And he’s finally being recognized as a great general," Trump added.

— NBC News (@NBCNews) October 13, 2018 Trump has drawn criticism for his defense of Confederate statues, including those of Robert E. Lee.

He drew widespread condemnation last year following a deadly rally in Charlottesville, Va., saying that white nationalist protesters were there to oppose the removal of a "very, very important" statue.

"They were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee,” Trump said at the time. “This week it's Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down. I wonder, is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?”

Trump, speaking at another rally in Ohio last year, said that he can be one of the “most presidential” presidents to hold office. "…With the exception of the late, great Abraham Lincoln, I can be more presidential than any president that’s ever held this office,” he said to a crowd in Youngstown.

So, in order to not offend libtards, we’re not allowed to praise a Confederate officer?

Screw that.

I’ll praise him. Lee absolutely was a great general. There is no disputing it.

He was an incredible, inspirational leader, and his troops loved him.

As well as Stonewall Jackson. And John Singleton Mosby. And Nathan Bedford Forrest. And Jeb Stuart. And A.P. Hill. They knew how to fight and how to cause havoc to the enemy - that’s what an army is supposed to do.

And I’m a “Yankee”.

Well said. The mob is trying to erase the greatness of America’s past.

Those grounded in American history are pretty well immune to the pitch given by progressives.

MAGA has to reach the school system and stop this PC madness, or it will only last for two short terms.

Lee was a great General regardless of what Liberals say. After the war he supported reconciliation between the North & South. AND, Unlike many Democrats he supported ending slavery. Lee went to West Point, fought in the Mexican-American War, and chose to fight for the South, his birth place. When the Alt Left Southern Poverty Law Center Goes crazy about Robert E.Lee ...that’s all you need to know...

Lee defeated every general that Lincoln threw at him. Grant defeated Lee because he was willing to send men to their deaths by the tens of thousands in an effort to overwhelm Lee. Lee, with far fewer resources and dwindling manpower, couldn’t keep up the fight.

Question: How does one find out who the best generals are? Absent a war there’s no laboratory. Anyone going up the ladder up to full bird colonel has followed somebody else’s orders. They’re robots.

But Rommels book was actually on infantry tactics. In the movie they used a close version of Guderians book title.

Lee was a great general. There is nothing wrong in recognizing talent.

Rommel was a great general of WW2 fame. So was Guderian. Yamamoto was a great admiral....until Midway.

That was the line in Red October when Sean Connery told Alec Baldwin that he had read his book.

Lee was on the wrong side of the war, but if you look at his actions militarily he was a great general.

There are wars in ancient China where the General has such a choice but they are professional.

Other mercenary forces probably had that choice.

"RE Lee was greatly troubled"

Lee was in San Antonio when Ft Sumter fell. He was summoned to Washington (DC) but resigned his commission instead. He would not fight against his state of Virginia.

Stay tuned.

Lee’s generalship is subject to criticism in recent years for the high casualties he repeatedly incurred by going on the tactical offensive against prepared Union lines. Eventually, the South was bled dry and exhausted. In addition, Lee was sometimes vague in his orders and did not always coordinate his subordinates well. Lost Cause mythmaking has tended to inflate Lee’s military reputation.
