Democrats Enter Campaign's Final Stretch Flush With Cash
NPR ^ | October 10, 20185:00 AM ET | Peter Overby

Not so long ago — the administration of President George W. Bush — $1 million could get you elected to Congress. Now, four weeks from Election Day, Democrats say 60 of their candidates raised that much or more, just in the last three months.

Fueled by an energetic base of small donors, Democrats are going into the final stretch of the election with a substantial financial advantage, erasing Republicans' typical fundraising edge.

The money is flowing to unlikely districts and is frequently tied to Democrats' opposition to President Trump.

In Fresno, Calif., prosecutor Andrew Janz, a Democrat, raised an eye-popping $4.1 million in the third quarter. He's out to topple an eight-term Republican, Rep. Devin Nunes, chair of the House Intelligence Committee and a staunch ally of President Trump.

Janz said his donor base is widespread. "In many parts of the country and in many parts of our state here, and even locally, people wanted this guy out of office," he said.

Other Democratic challengers have announced similarly stunning dollar amounts for the third quarter, which ran from July 1 to Sept. 30. Sharice Davids, in an eastern Kansas district, raised $2.7 million. Amy McGrath, in central Kentucky, raised $3.65 million. Elissa Slotkin, in southern Michigan, raised $2.6 million.

Good and bad news for Republicans

Spending numbers compiled by the Congressional Leadership Fund, a GOP super PAC aligned with House Republicans, and obtained by NPR, offer Republicans some good news and some bad news.

The good: The Congressional Leadership Fund has spent $90 million on the general-election campaign, versus $51 million by its Democratic rival, the House Majority PAC.

The bad news: The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC, has outspent the NRCC $64 million to $47 million.

Thanks to Bloomberg's and Steyer's $100m apiece, Democrats are swimming in an ocean of cash. Cash alone can't win elections, but it definitely helps. Sheldon Adelson, the GOP's go-to guy for big money, may have chipped in $100m, which is huge for a non-presidential year. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/11/us/politics/adelsons-political-donations-republicans.html

Headline should have ended with ...To Burn” because burn it they will, and lose they will.

Happy to watch them send the money up in smoke.

They have their money, so do we and we have one more weapon that they can’t hope to compete with, Trump.

I have never seen a President in my life time that has such a positive impact on whoever he campaigns for. He drives enthusiasm and I believe will prove to have some pretty large coattails.

I can’t think of an election where the big story isn’t always the dems huge cash advantage. It avails them not.

[I thought money in politics was bad?]

That was before the Democrats started labeling Republicans the party of white non-colleged-educated losers. Now Republican money is still bad, but Democratic money is good.

Hillary outspent Trump 5 to 1. Discuss.

Money is only bad when Republicans spend it against The Borg.

If cash is so crucial, why isn't Hillary president? That's right — she got her ass kicked by some guy working with a shoestring budget.

Trump beat Hillary based on a Hail Mary play focused on the Rust Belt states. His margin of victory in those states was less than 1%. Hillary was stupid and wanted to spike the ball by trying to win Georgia and other marginal states, so she spent way too much money there instead of in the Rust Belt, where it was badly needed. Congressional seats aren’t won based on a county by county electoral vote system, so the Trump maneuver won’t work there.

Likely with a holster full of last minute lies to release on the public, without time for them to be addressed before elections. This is what they usually do. We need to plan accordingly.

“”Fueled by an energetic base of small donors,””

I am always suspicious of millions of small Democrat donors giving $10 each.

Or is it a couple of really big Democrat donors who have found a way to funnel their money though a million of small donors?

When the Democrats are involved, I suspect the latter.

Cash lost some of its luster as the power of TV diminished as consumption patterns changed. It’s still useful for GOTV, but money is more often wasted today compared to 20 years ago.

The one thing money is still good for is making candidates rich when they lose with a big unspent bankroll.

Hail Mary play? Concern troll is concern troll. Trump outworked Hillary across the rural midwest and Rust Belt, putting in five campaign stops on the final day, culminatng in a final rally in Grand Rapids. Michigan. That was Trumps fifth speech on Election Day. He arrived three hours late, to a packed house at 1 a.m,

IOW, Trump’s campaign effort was a great deal more than a “Hail Mary” - which implies he had no chance at winning, Trump is campaigning now with the same earnestness and energy for midterm candidates. And Dems have not one solitary figure who can match his draw or personality. Having the president draw capacity crowds is not nothing,

Maybe the money helps if Dems used it to craft a message. I suspect they’ll just use it to rent more mobs.

That’s good to hear, the Clintons were almost out of drugs and booze, and Obama was running low on weed.

Cash matters not. It boils down to
determination. There’s only so many
voters, who’s minds were made up
long ago. Every voter knows where
the lines are drawn. Conservative
or liberal. Plain and simple. I pay
no attention to political ads
except if they reinforce my beliefs.
