Even hot weather outliers, like the 2003 European heat wave, “only” killed 70,000 on the continent. However, the startling part of the stat wasn’t that it was extreme cold that was so deadly, but *moderate* cold.
That is, almost every year there is moderate cold, and mortality associated with it. This adds up and overwhelms intermittent deadly heat waves in numbers.
