A report said that fecal matter was discovered on every McDonalds self-service touchscreen swabbed during an investigation in the United Kingdom.
Samples were taken at six McDonalds locations in London and two in Birmingham. The samples all revealed a contamination of coliforms, which are found in human fecal matter.
We were all surprised how much gut and fecal bacteria there was on the touchscreen machines. These cause the kind of infections that people pick up in hospitals, said London Metropolitan University Dr. Paul Matawele, according to The Metro.
For instance Enterococcus faecalis is part of the flora of gastrointestinal tracts of healthy humans and other mammals. It is notorious in hospitals for causing hospital-acquired infections, he stated.
Customers first choose their food on the screens before heading to the front to pick up their meals. Often times, they dont wash their hands or wipe them down with hand sanitizer, the report suggested.
At one branch, a screen was found to have Staphylococcus, or staph. According to the U.S. Food Safety website, some strains can cause food poisoning when a food handler contaminates food and then the food is not properly refrigerated. Other sources of food contamination include the equipment and surfaces on which food is prepared.
Matawele told the paper: Seeing Staphylococcus on these machines is worrying because it is so contagious. It starts around peoples noses, if they touch their nose with their fingers and then transfer it to the touchscreen someone else will get it, and if they have an open cut which it gets into, then it can be dangerous.
He noted that there are fears about Staphylococcus becoming more resistant to antibiotics.
However, it is still really dangerous in places like Africa where it can cause toxic shock, he said.

I’m not much concerned about the everyday germs in my home. My body is used to them. But I still wash my hands at all the appropriate times.
I rarely eat at McDonald’s, but what the heck are you implying about their customers? Or do people who only eat in high end restaurants not carry germs? (On does theirs just not stink? Sheesh!)
The employees.
Took me a second.
So employees who have difficulty with such basic things as getting simple orders straight, speaking English, employees who are told they can’t make a living working at McDonalds because, “It’s not that kind of job” are so professional they have the cleanest kitchens in the entire restaurant industry?
That’s pretty amazing Jeff.
I've been in the kitchens of over a hundred restaurants -- from Taco Bell to five star -- in two states. Although there may be exceptions, McDonalds' kitchens are clean.
All you have to do to be contaminated at ANY restaurant is handle the menu or handle cash.
McDonalds makes money through providing a consistent product at a low price in a clean restaurant and they hold their franchises to a high standard of service and cleanliness because if one franchise is bad, it damages their brand. They are strict.
And really, how much skill does it take to clean a restaurant?
I get the distinct impression you’ve never worked in food service.
Yep. But I’m betting it’s not routine for the health department to swab touch screens at McDonald’s, or menus. I have a friend who was a restaurant inspector. She’s a stickler, and her boss told her she had to back off, or every restaurant in town would be shut down.
I don’t like touching menus either. Always carry hand sanitizer with me.

But you said, "McDonald's has the cleanest kitchens in the entire restaurant industry, cleaner than ANY restaurant". No?
Just seems a bit odd that low wage, unskilled laborers working in fast food slop joints do such a professional job cleaning McDonald's kitchens, keeping them the cleanest in the entire industry. Amazing!
Drug use is rampant among kitchen workers in a lot of high end restaurants. Don’t know if that equates into unsanitary but it’s there.
Not I’m sure you know nothing about the food service industry.
McDonalds’ entire operation is SYSTEMIZED, and cleaning is part of the system. It is not a slop shop, it’s a frigging MACHINE.
Go to any McDonalds in America and you will find the same products, cooked the same way, cooked fast in a clean environment, for a low price.
In a nutshell: Cleanliness is an integral part of their BUSINESS MODEL. It’s what they sell.
If you ever run across a McDonalds that strays from the formula, it is an outlier, and they are putting their franchise in jeopardy.
McSh!t Happens.
McDonalds entire operation is SYSTEMIZED? Oh, corporate developed a system did they? And this is allegedly performed by those low wage, low skilled and often unmotivated employees you referred to?
Btw, that won't happen. I gave up fast food slop joints like McWhopper. I avoid them like the plague and actually make an effort to eat better. It's a personal choice!☺ What's interesting, is after eating better, that stuff tastes like crap.
