A preliminary investigation has found that a gasket failure caused a chemical gas leak that forced the temporary closure of a heavily used bridge connecting Delaware and New Jersey on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Officials with Croda Inc. said Tuesday that initial findings show that an incorrect gasket fitted on a pipe during construction of its Delaware ethylene oxide production plant failed Sunday.

The company is sending the gasket to independent experts for analysis and confirmation.

Ethylene oxide is nasty stuff. It is toxic and has a wide concentration range of explosive mixtures with air (which is why they use it in air-fuel bombs)

I drive there everyday. and why Delaware let them build it so close to the Delaware Memorial Bridge considering the toxicity of the chemical is beyond reasoning.

I haven’t been there for a long time, but wasn’t there a dupont chemical plant near the bridge that predated the bridge?

The title is misleading , A gasket can be simple , its the installation that takes skill and isnt always that simple. Thats why a good mechanic can make 100k a year installing “ simple gaskets”. A better headline should have said “ Gas leak shuts down bridge” and leave the ignoramic phrase “ Simple gasket” out.

Been there that night, unbelievable traffic jam. Only warning was “Bridge closed find alternate route”. Found our way out of rundown Wilmington thanks to “On Star”.

It’s also one of the major methods for conducting sterilization of medical products.

Its so bad that the chambers they use to treat products are specifically built with weak ceilings to help direct any explosions upward.

After they pull a vacuum to vent the chamber by pulling a vacuum they still have to allow product to set between 24-48 hours to make sure that none of it is still left in the packaging.

I’ll bet when they test the gasket, they’ll find it didn’t have any asbestos in it. Those asbestos gaskets work really well.

Yes, but that was and is on the New Jersey side.

So maybe the logic was that since you already have one chemical plant on one side, what's the harm in having another on the other side.
