The U.S. Justice Department now says that all internet gambling is illegal.

A November opinion made public Monday reversed a 2011 opinion on the Wire Act, which established the law as applicable to only sports betting. The DOJ claims that the 2011 opinion misinterpreted the statute and reinterprets the Wire Act to encompass all forms of gambling that crosses state boundaries.

The opinion could have wide-reaching effects in states that sell lottery tickets online or where online gambling is legal. This number has increased in recent months following the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize sports betting in the U.S. last year.

GOP megadonor and casino mogul Sheldon Adelson backed a coalition that had long lobbied the Justice Department to reconsider its 2011 decision. While the precise effects of the change are unclear, lobbyists told The Washington Post that it could affect interstate compacts and lotteries.

I’ll bet they don’t say that Powerball is illegal...if the State does it, it’s probably okay.

This is a political decision - Sheldon Adelson gave us a ton of money and this is what he wants.

When the bandwidth of online gambling takes up bandwidth that online stock trading wants, something must be done!

Timely, truly another demonstration of our effective law enforcement. After something is completely accepted and commodified Uncle Scam pipes up for his cut.

Can we just drop the ridiculous premise that “conservatives” support this type of garbage because of a “law and order” bent.

I know most people here get it, but there are still too many Jeeeeff Sessions types for my freedom to exist in comfort.

"What’s the 'juice' then. "

Money voluntarily paid by a customer to the provider of a desired service.

Not at all like a tax which is involuntarily paid at the point of a gun. Lots and lots of guns, actually.

Commerce clause of course.

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

It says to regulate, not to outlaw.

It is absurd to think that the Federal Government was given the power to outlaw something that foreign Nations do. Logically, then, it cannot outlaw what the States do either based upon this clause.
