There’s a difference between tradition and law. Trump is required by law to inform Congress of the State of the union. Law gives him aythority to call one, or both houses for a meeting, and law gives him the authority to adjourn.
Just because “we’ve always done it this way”, doesn’t make it immutable. Some people have been corrupt since the beginning of mankind, but doesn’t make corruption something to embrace.
Up until Wilson, hand written SOTUs were typical.
A January SOTU is traditional. The Constitution only requires that the President advise the nation on the state of the union "from time to time".
