Human diet causing 'catastrophic' damage to planet: study

The landmark health study in The Lancet calls on people to double their consumption of vegetables, fruits and nuts

... "To have any chance of feeding 10 billion people in 2050 within planetary boundaries" -- the limits on Earth's capacity to absorb human activity -- "we must adopt a healthy diet, slash food waste, and invest in technologies that reduce environmental impacts," said co-author Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Impact Research.

- Where's the beef? -

"It is doable but it will take nothing less than global agricultural revolution," he told AFP.

The cornerstone of "the great food transformation" called for in the study is a template human diet of about 2500 calories per day.

"We are not saying everyone has to eat in the same way," Lang said by phone. "But broadly -- especially in the rich world -- it means a reduction of meat and dairy, and a major increase in plant consumption."

The diet allows for about seven grammes (a quarter of an ounce) of red meat per day, and up to 14. A typical hamburger patty, by comparison, is 125 to 150 grammes.

For most rich nations, and many emerging ones such as China and Brazil, this would represent a drastic five-to-ten-fold reduction.

Beef is the main culprit...

“Before this is over...Progressives will have all of us eating Tofu!”

My gut feeling is that it’s going to be more like Soylent.

‘And where does this study imagine that protein and essential amino acids will come from - the building blocks required for advanced brain development?’

protein contents would have to be combined between sources like grains and legumes in order to be sufficient, abetted by starchy carbohydrates sources like tubers...a satisfying, nutritious diet of this sort is possible, but difficult to adjust to our lifestyles...good point about the water, btw...

I’m for this when our country goes full socialized medicine because obesity is expensive. Pro Big Brother people should feel the pain as much as my pocketbook does.

plant proteins and chemicals are not going to do it. There is a reason that civilization advanced by leaps and bounds once man changed to a steady meat-based diet. Something in meat that’s just not in plants, as evidenced by the reality that vegans, in general, have less robust immune systems. To wit:

Very, very little food is allowed to rot in our fridge so very, very little is ever wasted and tossed in the garbage.

The beef went into a pot of chili I’m right now finishing up, yummmmm!

A key to the Potsdam Institute is the word “pot.” It must be nice to be paid big money from those government grants, stay high all day and write pot inspired fantasy.

These people aren't going to be happy until we are eeking out bare survival lives. Hunting and gathering ala the Hunger Games while they air drop into our gated, crime ridden zones that we are allowed to live in rations that keep us starving.

Ofcourse heroin, booze and other addictables will still be plentiful.

Pathological Liars. Back in the 90s the USDA determined that with then current technology the planet could feed 35 billion.

OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the sun’s planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?

Why would I adjust my lifestyle so thoses who can’t feed themselves can multiply?

Feeding someone who is hungry is different than keeping a gene pool alive.

how about people start having their own gardens again? or community gardens? Raise cow, pig, etc too. less e-coli issues from “field workers”, you grow what you like to eat, cut down on costs in many ways, convenient.

rain water. I ‘ve had some years of veggie gardening i didn’t have to actually water the plants much and when I did almost all was from prior collected rain. sure that won’t help everywhere but in many areas it could work if people used the resources (rain collection being one) best.

Will be making some pesto from the kitchen window sill basil to go with dinner tonight. No pesticides and no illegals wiping their butts on it.

Might as well skip to the punchline solution in every commie/globalist genocidal article:

"We need to eliminate 6.5 Billion people to save the earth."

It never changes. Same solution for every pending disaster.
