Course, my rough ratio should probably be lower because the already-funded includes DoD, which includes the military. So I would put the number around 3MM non-essential total, across the entire FedGov.

You must not know many federal employees. I live in Maryland where they abound and can tell you that it would take three bulldozers to get the typical fed to leave the cozy/protected nest.
No one who didn’t work should get a dime of back pay. That is would just be wrong. Let them collect unemployment the same as everyone else.

Why the hell not? Fire the dead weights. When Ihad a federal job, we added one employee who was a total screw-up who had been transfered out of three other departments, largely for incompetency. It was clear that whether he did his work correctly that day was whether he gave a damn that particular day. We needed to divert another person to review everything he did to check it for mistakes.
Folks like that deserve a pink slip.

Jim is right... FIRE them. Hey since they work for US why can’t WE fire them. Why arent they held to higher standards?

I don’t think most people here really understand what “essential” means in the government. Just because you are categorized as non essential or non exempt does’nt mean your job is not important.
Example in DOD - civilian Inventory Managers are considered “essential” because they deal with direct soldier support on a daily basis. Civilian depot repair personnel and weapons assembly teams are not considered essential even though they are the highly specialized technicians who fix broken equipment for the military every day.
Many positions are coded essential or non essential based not in what they do but how they are funded. There is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation here regarding this subject.
It is a really bad idea to just start-cutting people without knowing exactly what they do or don’t do first.

The only problem I have with those statistics is that a relatively minute percentage of Federal employees donate to political campaigns and they are not typical of the rest. Many are apolitical just like the general population. Having worked in or with numerous agencies over the years, my experience is that they basically mirror the population. Heck, one of the most conservative people I ever met was a scientist with the EPA.
