So good to know that we have FReepers who are so much more informed and smarter than the men and women who actually have decades of experience working and dealing with the daily issues on our nation’s borders.

He is for a wall, but seems to be the only one in Washington who is.

So we should just tell him winning isn't everything, participation is what really counts.

Sounds like you need a warm bath and a stiff drink!

Too funny I was thinking the same thing

The gop never had a “super majority” in either the Senate or House.

You’re welcome, but I’ve been here many years under other names.

Thanks for the distinction. Not sure how much of a difference it makes, though.

Why did he wait until AFTER the HoR was in dim hands to start this grandstanding over a wall?

Because Mitch said he wouldn't address it until after the mid-terms.

There already is over 600 miles of fencing, primarily at urban areas to prevent mass crossings. Now they need more inspectors to search more than the 1 in 5 vehicles that are currently being searched. Also much better port search capability. Also roads and barracks along the areas that are not fenced or likely to be fenced. The Great Wall of China did not stop mass invasions. It’s greatest use was as a road along which troops could easily march and ride to get to trouble spots, plus barracks to house troops and horses. This was often in very rough terrain. Same principle for border security here, and we have electronic surveillance means to monitor more remote areas if we had the roads there to mobilize the border patrol. More ground surveillance to stop the tunnels that allow large amounts of drugs to enter. Also money to check on and deal with the 3/4
million visa overstay folk. Like those nasty 9/11 pilots who overstayed their visas. Most of the best use areas for walls and high fences are already built. Sure, some more may be useful, but I am more worried about all the other things we have neglected because some people can only understand the idea of a wall and haven’t even learned how to use a computer yet. Below is link for AOL announcement re reopening govt.

Not every Democrat is on Pelosi's side.

The ones that matter are, at least publicly.

yeah I’m totally in Eeyore mode right now - I see this as a very significant strategic mistake.

I look more on the glass-half-full side.

A. It pulls the plug on the RAT / media “woe is me!” talking points for furloughed workers.

B. It gives the worthless Congress a firm deadline when they have to come up with something... or Trump will go over their heads, declare a national emergency and get it done some other way.

C. It takes away Queen Nancy’s excuse for cancelling the State of the Union, allowing Trump to make an appeal for his agenda directly to the public.

We need a wall from sea to sea.

I’m not settling for excuses, and nobody else I know is.

We expect a wall, and we better get one.

He will no doubt face Mitt Romney who has already shown his hand by voting with the Dems on this issue. Also the other guy from UTAH (Cotton?), who may be operating in tandem.

With Putin, Erdogan, Xi working together putting naval and air bases in our southern hemisphere...and Maduro providing operational space to Hezbollah and Iran. That’s a real set up for a conflict. Trump could make all sorts of requirements to ward this off.

I’ll tell you what, sir - when you, and others here on FR: stop insulting our president; stop questioning his integrity and motives; stop working to undermine his support, and; stop giving aid and comfort to his enemies by posting negative commentary against him on a public forum ... Then I’ll agree to your terms.

Because, I see nothing “substantive” in the way he is being treated on this topic by supposed conservatives here on FR.

Fun and games is all this is... Trump should emerge one-upping dems and repubs who hate him if he does the Speech at the HOR plus the wall bit using the National Security angle.

The problem is the sustainability of everything else (Which Trump had nothing to with).

At some point, the fiscal health needs to be dealt with to the point of a long shut-down to force spending concessions across the board. The Federal Reserve is gambling with their current monetary policies (Keeping rates capped at the projected rate of 4.2%) in hopes that the next 20 years there will not be any recession at all. I think they are a bit optimistic looking at our current deficits and future obligations. If there is (A huge interest increase will be needed and inflation uncontrollable), this will be the Great Recession II and will make the economic conditions of the Weimar Republic look like paradise on earth.

Just about everything has to be nuked. Possible a few Democrats might vote our way, very few.

And there are always people like MurCowSki and Collins, etc.

The SOTU gains a larger audience than most events. He’ll reach a far larger audience.
