The word you are looking for isn't stupid, it sociopath. Sociopath's are unburdened by a moral compass or standards of decency that the rest of us have. As such they can be totally amazed that their reasonable and rationale actions, like killing someone, are seen negatively.
This whole story is very hard to believe.
We are asked to believe, that bigoted guys were out on a bitter cold night, with rope and bleach, on the off-chance they would encounter an actor they dislike so they could attack him.
Any violent attack should be investigated of course. But I question if things really happened to the way the media has been reporting.
