Did Trump pull a switcheroo?
CNN ^ | 2/6/2019 | David Gergen

Posted on 02/06/2019 10:07:39 AM PST by TangledUpInBlue

Had his inaugural address or his past speeches to a Joint Session of Congress been in the tenor and tone of the speech Donald Trump delivered Tuesday night, he might now enjoy broader support in the country. Sure this State of the Union once again had plenty of red meat for his base; sure he again made some outrageous arguments (e.g., his claim that had he not been elected, we would now be at war with North Korea). But this speech for the first time tried hard to reach out beyond his base and showed some heart.

This is a fair synopsis. But the bigger point is this - it is a major accomplishment that Dems are writing like this about the SOTU.

It was a great speech - except for the part about Korea that Gergen acknowledges. I thought that was stupid. But the speech was well written and delivered very well.

I went in with balanced expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

His support is broad out here in the country, a place with which David Gergen has no familiarity.

Gergen is an apologist for the Deep State. I have always despised him. Pretending to be even-handed when he is not.

I think the adjustment in tone, and tossing in of "bones" like AIDS and child cancer is about the midterm results, mainly the suburbs that Trump won in 2016 but the he GOP lost in 2018.

As this is politics, and getting elected counts for a lot, minor things that help him win in 2020 are welcomed by me (if they are minor, AND they are effective).

Yes, he was one of Reagan’s advisors. I have always liked him - his analysis usually seems balanced to me. Though I will agree that he’s moved further left over the years.

Typo correction: “the he GOP” should read “the GOP”.

Correct. To be effective he has to lead on them continually otherwise it will just seem like pandering.

He would be the most successful President in history if the MSM was not dissing him 95% of the time and the opposition did not resist at every turn.

F'n communists.

Agreed. Gergen always regurgitates simple establishment banalities and nothing more.

Trump has ALWAYS had his door open for dialogue, to a fault, IMHO.

Another deep state slug heard from. Don’t forget “In 1993 Gergen returned to the White House, serving as counselor to President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Warren Christopher.” (Wikipedia)

This is not the first time his speeches have tried to reach across the isle and showed heart.

Trump, imo, has shown heart in every speech. And he has reached out across the isle and called for a united America in every speech.

This might be the first time that 80% of the speech was dedicated to trying to get Congress to move forward instead of staying in petty gridlock mode. But he shouldn’t have ever had to dedicate that much of a speech to getting people to move forward.

I thought it was hilarious when the women finally had to applaud and trump called them out for not having been supposed to do that and then thanking them for it.

It’s political ju-jitsu.

He extended an olive branch for cooperation and bi-partisan support, which is what the mass of barely engaged voters want to hear. Particularly Independents.

He knew he was on safe ground doing this as after 2 years of the Democrats vilifying him as Satan and Hitler and a stealer of elections there was NO WAY they’d accept the offer.

The end result is that Trump now looks like the good guy and his opponents look like unreasonable extremists.

Moderates seem to like the speech therefore I need to listen to it again. It must have been not so good.

I think the Korea part was likely spot on. Hillary would have so greatly weakened us that war would be inevitable. That has been their plan.

Not just the Ministry of Propaganda and the Democrats, he is also being opposed by Bush League Republicans.
We wouldn’t have needed Trump if the GOP sided with the citizens and the rule of law.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exactly. He will talk to anyone about anything to get things worked out. I remember very early on the Congressional Black Caucus member was barking at him about something and he said just come on over and we will talk anytime you want. Of course they just continued bashing him and shunning him in their childish little way.
What? Who’s plan? That we go to war with North Korea? That’s crap.
What would be the point? It would put us perilously close to nuclear war with China and/or Russia. It would kill millions. It would cause a parade of immigrants into China and they can barely take care of their own people. And for what?
North Korea has NOTHING? A barren wasteland with no food, no resources, no electric grid - the place is a dump. If they had no nukes, we’d pay ZERO attention to them.
We’ve been there for 50+ years. Ain’t nothin gonna change.
